Simple Coffee. Element started out as a fairly typical independent coffee shop. And then the owner decided to do something different. Radically different. In addition to redoing the interior decor of the place, he stripped down the menu. Waaaaay down. Element focuses on very basic espresso drinks, fair trade coffee and a few great teas. If you drop in expecting to get a 15-word coffee drink like you’re used to at Starbucks, you’ll be a bit disappointed. But if you like some of the more basic espresso drinks (lattes, mochas, etc.) and an emphasis on quality products that will make your conscience feel a tad better, this is your place. The owner is friendly and usually the one taking your order. The staff are all friendly for that matter, and happy to help you decide on what to have, in case the small number of choices confuses you. They don’t utilize syrups – they rely on home-made (or like home-made) chocolate syrup, simple syrup, and agave sweetener. There is usually a small supply of freshly baked pastries and bread slices available, but nothing more extensive. They offer free wi-fi as well as a computer if you need that as well. There are a few outdoor tables in addition to the mix of couches, regular tables and chairs and high tables and chairs. There are normally enough outlets accessible if you want to run off your power adapter rather than your battery. They sell coffee beans in addition to individual drinks. I think this is a great alternative to the mega-chain coffee places. Take a chance on going back to basics – I think you’ll be glad you did.
