New restaurants are always a treat. I like discovering new foods, cool beverages, and quaint dining atmospheres and will almost always choose something new over something familiar. And I definitely quenched my desire for something new when I visited Green Dragon Tavern & Museum in Carlsbad, California.I was in the Carlsbad area as part of a beercation so I already knew that Green Dragon Tavern would be a good place to find delicious craft beer. But what I didnt expect was the atmosphere. Green Dragon doubles as a museum, complete with facts and figures about early American history with books and other things available to buy. The establishment was named after the original Green Dragon Tavern in Boston and it strives to provide a New England experience thousands of miles away from the home base. With a name like the Green Dragon, you might open the menu expecting to find options like Mongolian beef and orange chicken, but in fact, the Green Dragon specializes in American food with specialties that include lobster mac and cheese, short rib burger, philly cheese steak, crab cakes, baked cod, etc. The menu options and the interior are intended to replicate the look and feel of a New England tavern and they succeed on most counts. I had a tough time deciding what to buy but eventually went with the Shepherds Pie. Made with ground angus beef, cheddar cheese, roasted corn, roasted bell peppers, garlic rosemary, and green peppercorn demi, it was excellent overall- a little different than other Shepherds pie I have tried, but different in a positive way.Beer is an important part of the Green Dragon experience and there are dozens of choices. Like usual, I went with a flight sampler so I could try multiple beers at once. The beer was a tasty match with the Shepherds Pie and with the beer and food combined, I left filling quite full. Satisfied, yes, but much fuller than I expected based on the amount of food and drinks I consumed.Carlsbad, California has many charms and the Green Dragon Tavern and Museum is definitely one of them. This is not a quiet, intimate restaurant- it is more like a cross between a sports bar and fine dining; in other words, two of my favorite things combined into one. Its a place you should definitely seek out, both for the food/beer and to brush up on early American history on your next visit to this California coastal city. greatbeernow.com
The Green Dragon Tavern & Museum they have a lot of things going on restaurant, tavern, coffee house, banquet facility, museum and tourist destination. Headquarters of the Revolution indeed. They are also a Revelation and a welcome addition to North County. If you cant find a reason to spend a couple of hours here, youre just not trying. Cheers, my friends!
Great food and drink, and a history lesson to boot.A replica Boston Tavern, and American Revolution themed restuarant seemed like on odd fit for the area, but it made for a great outing. A gastropub menu, but with some very nice, and delicious touches. Bar is very well stocked, and a happy hour that served up premium beers, almost free. Service was absolutely great, and prices very reasonable. Totally fed a party of 5, with drinks, appetizers, dinner, desert, and coffee for less than a dinner for 2 at most other places. Will definitely be back with friends, and recommend.Be sure to check out the attached museum, as well!
Green Dragon Tavern & Museum. Took my husband to the Green Dragon Tavern on Father’s Day. We had the good fortune to arrive for the first ever brunch menu. So many delicious choices. I had the lobster eggs benedict with roasted potatoes and a small cup of fresh fruit while my husband had the veggie omelette with potatoes & fruit. Both were yummy and we ate every morsel. Orange juice was served in a tall pilsner glass and the coffee was very good. Our server was Ashleigh and her personality is delightful as is the rest of the friendly staff. We enjoyed our stroll through the museum aprs brunch and are looking forward to doing this again soon!
