Traditional Cupcakes. Hansen’s is primarily a cake bakery, and their cakes are good. They’re fluffy and traditional, and I’ve always been happy with them. While I usually buy cakes only on special occasions, I pick up a few cupcakes whenever I happen to be in the area while they’re open. Cupcakes cost a buck, and they are just as good as any $3 cupcakes in town. They’ll even put on the topping of your choice, if you ask. When they’re open late in the summer, it’s nice to stop by for a cupcake for dessert after eating Ethiopian food at one of the many restaurants on the block. As a side note, one other thing I like about Hansen’s is that the owner loves talking about cakes and will discuss cakes and baking all day if you let him. It’s refreshing to see somebody who seems to enjoy his job so much.
Beware. I choose this bakery to make a cake for a very special occasion due to good reviews, and they made the most awful looking, embarrassing, inappropriate cake which left me in tears. I had even picked out one of their pre-fab options, and the cake I got was nothing like the one I ordered. And to make things worse, they offered no help or refund or even an apology. They were rude and unprofessional. I just wanted to warn others who might be thinking about trusting this bakery for something important, like a wedding or birthday.
