A Really Good Place. Walters is an interesting place. Its main theme is Afghan inspired dishes. However, you can get all kinds of food here. Short ribs, Italian dishes, tacos, eggrolls and fried chicken are on the menu. Many of these dishes have some kind of a twist in the preparation, and in some cases the twist is more like a knot: ever consider something like gravlax pizza? Its on the menu! Personally, I like Afghan food and thats what Ive had the two times Ive been here. The first time was several years ago and I cant actually recall what I had but I liked it. The second time was just the other night. My sister ordered the Ashraf Kabob: Turkey breast marinated in lemon juice, chicken stock, garlic and soy sauce and served on a large nan topped with marinated red onions and cilantro. She thought it was fantastic. Lucky for me, she couldnt finish it and I got to try some and I agreed. Imagine agreeing with your sister! It was just a taste explosion in your mouth. Her husband had a turkey pita sandwich and a turkey vegetable soup. His sandwich wasnt made with some puny pocket pita bread. It was large. He liked both dishes a lot. I had the tandoori shrimp with basmati rice. I loved the rice and the shrimp looked great, but it really didnt fit the menu description of shrimp marinated in hot and spicy tandoori. Not that it was bad, but I was expecting something more tasty after sampling my sisters dish. Overall, I think this is a really good place worth going back to again and again. Some day I may even try that gravlax pizza!
New Year’s Eve Rip Off. The New Year’s Eve Party at Walter’s was the worst expenditure of money. It was shocking in light of this restaurant is one of our favorites for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We paid $90.00 per person, this included a horrible appetizer buffet of chili, overcooked chicken wings and small little pizza’s (this appetizer part cost $25.00 over the coverage charge per person). Our price also included wine and mixed well drinks…what was covered changed as the night progressed. So, drinks we thought were included we had to pay for…. The DJ in the cottage played the worst music most of the time, there were a few songs that you could dance to….my party (the six of us) went up to dance and he left with his girlfriend. When he returned, we asked him to play Motown or Michael Jackson. This was the only time he responded to a request from us. I spoke to two managers – the first one – the female daughter of the owners was fantastic—she said she was sorry and asked me what she could do to improve the experience-she brought us a bottle of champagne which was a nice gesture. When her brother, thee manager came to our table and asked how things were, he looked surprised when I said not good and we felt like we were getting ripped of to pay $180.00 per couple. When I stood up to talk to him he was totally defensive, asked me how many drinks I had, which was incredibly insulting. (I had two) I did lose my temper at that point and told him that I felt he was saying F you and advised him to take some customer service classes. Unfortunately an experience like this poisons your impression of a restaurant. Fortunately, the other manager was elegant. We will try to remember that experience as Walter’s has been one of our favorite restaurants in Claremont. When his father managed the restaurant an experience like this would not have occurred.I apologized to my friends as I had encouraged them to come to Walters and we ended paying over $600.00 for the six of us which was may be worth $150.00.
A Claremont classic. Walter’s has been a staple in Claremont for many years combining California casual dining with Afghan specialties. The restaurant is rather sprawling going from room to room and a lovely patio area too. 8 of us came for breakfast most recently. The food was all generally well received and most people in our group were very happy with the food quality. The Afghan fries are very popular with a number of us. They are basically sliced potatoes that are battered and fried. I think they sell them as Aussie potatoes at the County Fair. They are a nice variation on regular breakfast potatoes but you can get hash browns if you prefer. I had the lamb sausage and eggs. It is a mild sausage but I found it to be a good foil for both the Afghan hot sauce and the chutney they have in containers on every table. The Afghan patty is ground beef with onion and bell pepper. It is also on the mild/bland side. So I really recommend the offered condiments to liven up your food. It may be the difference between what some fond bland and boring and hat others rave about. Service was generally good, although I should note that our party did not get served all at the same time which is kind of a restaurant no-no. The biggest error in judgment though was serving a child’s pancake order on a very hot plate. That’s just not thinking things through.Still we find Walter’s to be a comfortable and satisfying place to dine.
We travel from Las Vegas to San Diego at least 2 to 3 times a month and we always stop for lunch or dinner at Walter’s. The food is different, not the same old same old offered at most restaurants. It is delicious and fresh…never had a bad meal. We always order the Bowlanies to start our meal, they are these delicious little pockets of seasoned meat and potatoes which you dip in chutney and yogurt…so so good!
It’s overpriced. The food is still good though.
Overpriced. Underflavored. Nice ambiance but it doesn’t make up for the mediocre service and mediocre flavor. We tried the lamb kabob which was just ok, the shrimp tandoori which was good but portion was small for the price. Ended with the recommended desert of margolaine (sp?) and we both laught at the size then laught at the taste. And were further dissapointed with the famous fries. Wouldn’t recommend.
Eclectic Menu. The menu is a melange of Afghan, American, Mexican and whatnot. The lamb burrito is unusual and very good. I’ve enjoyed all the Afghan items I’ve ordered, but one dish stands out… the aash soup is wonderful. I would travel miles out of my way for this alone.
