I have to say I’m really liking the mix of flavors Phlight has going with their dishes. Stopped in tonight to grab some quick plates. Tapas are what their known for so I was surprised that I left pretty full from three plates and yes…the plates are pretty filling.First up were the bacon wrapped dates. Nothing ground breaking with this dish but the cheese used with it was delicious. After having this dish at other places, I’ve come to learn that the flavor of dates will override any and everything you add to it making it tough for all other ingredients to stand out.Next were the tomato tempura. Now this was fried tomatoes done right with cheese, shiitake mushrooms and squash all cooked within the tempura together. The pesto sauce provided with it was some of the best I’ve had with a flavor that was more on the sharp side.Last of course is the winner of the night which was the double-dipped fried chicken. Awesome dish! Nice portions of flavorful chicken stacked on top of one another over a bed of grilled kale and chorizo gravy. CHORIZO GRAVY!!! Imagine the good taste of chorizo in a nice creamy gravy minus all the grease…this is what you’ll get here and it mixed all so good with the chicken and kale. Hmm Hmmmm Delicious!!!The restaurant itself is dim lighted with staff who are friendly and stays on top of everything. This is another great restaurant I’ve experienced in Uptown Whittier and I’m looking forward to coming again.Visit date 9/20/2015
Great food! We are from out of town and just happened upon Phlights while shopping in Whittier. We ordered a great garden salad, which had yummy cheese and sweet cranberry something or other. A perfect start. We then had sauted kale (YUM), empanadas and pork belly tacos. Not a fan of the pork belly but we didn’t know what it was. The empanadas were AMAZING. After that we drank our sangria and decided to also order the asparagus and the fish tacos. Again, awesome. All this was only $50. Would come back here again anytime. Service was quick and friendly. Very attentive waiters. Great place, overall!
Interesting Menu. I had both dinner and lunch here. They have an interesting menu. For dinner we shared bacon-wrapped dates as an hors d’oeuvres, and they were delicious. For my entree I had the chicken mole, which was very good also. The atmosphere was nice and the service was friendly and relatively prompt.
Not impressed!!!. My husband & I were excited to finally eat at Phlights , we had heard nothing but great reviews. When we arrived there was no sitting available except for the bar area, so we sat at the bar & was quickly greeted by the hostess Brianna. She introduced us to the menu and suggested some favorite dishes. My husband & I ordered our food & we patiently waited. We waited, and waited , and waited!!!!!! It took them over an our to serve our plates. Brianna never once explained the reason for the delay. There was only one chef preparing the food, which was unsual. The food was fairly good, but not great. I dont think i will return due to the lack of the service… we payed over $100 for three plates and a bottle of wine… not sure if i will return….
Let’s give it a try…. I’ve passed by, heard about and read about Phlight which is snuggled in the picturesque uptown Whittier. The restaurant is fairly small and people don’t seem in a rush to go home which is why it took me a while to get seated. After getting seated I had previously read about the bottomless bowl of cinnamon-roasted almonds with mixed olives which is true to some extent, we did get the small bowl but it wasn’t bottomless. No refill in sight. We tried several dishes, the sweet potatoes: tasty, steak: juicy and full of flavor, paella: bit disappointed, smallest clams, tiniest sausage and the rice was a bit greasy, chicken wings: tasted like a well done bbq. Overall the dishes were ok nothing to rave about and the portions are small. If you go with a big appetite with a group of 3-4, I suggest you get several dishes (4-6).
