This was a new experience but I loved it. For my first time it was great. The food is amazing, family style portions give you more then you want. The service is great also, she helped us pick some bomb dishes and the food came out so fast. Great business!
Awesome Chinese joint, the best priced item is the pork chop and rice dish. Love their warm pot seafood dish, bit spicy though, and try the salt&pepper scrimp. Sick..
Above average dishes. Bold flavors.. I’ve been here a handful of times and 90% of the time, the dishes we ordered were very delicious. That is enough for me to say that this place is consistent and highly recommended. I have enjoyed the fish with garlic sauce, hot and sour soup, scallops with black bean sauce, Hunan lamb, Szechwan chicken, and walnut shrimp. The flavors are bold and that is the way I like my food.I would recommend going for lunch first and inviting several people to try different dishes, since it is served family style. The prices are much more reasonable at lunch, and you will not have to wait as long to be seated.
Good and afforable Chinese.. When i was in irvine for the weekend last month, my mom suggested chef chen’s as she knows that west la is devoid of good chinese food. that plus the fact that she and a few girlfriends had lunch there earlier in the week and she wanted to try different items off the menu. hehe.we moseyed in around 12:30pm on a saturday and were lucky enough to grab the last remaining table. good for us because a line soon formed at the entrance as a plethora of families showed up within 15mins of us siting down.chef chen’s menu is quite eclectic, they serve northern chinese food, southern chinese food and even taiwanese food. at first i was wary because restaurants that claim to specialize in more than one type of cuisine typically never accels at any type. overly ambitious i thought to myself.we ended up with a nice mixture of food representing all three regions….from xiao long bao to 3 way chicken hot pot to a shredded pancake stir fry to stir fried nian gao. i must say, chef chen’s is pretty good. the flavor of the shredded pancake stir fry was great and reminded me of my youth. the nian gao’s texture was just right, sticky, chewy but firm and the chicken hot pot was bursting with flavor. however, my gripes are:- the chicken was extremely boney, thus i felt gyped cause there was not much meat- the xiao long bao’s were ok at best. although they had a thicker skin (which i enjoy more than the thin variety ala DTF), the skin was broken on 1/4 of them, thus all the soup/juice oozed out before we could eat themservice was a bit slow as we had to wave down the waitress to take our order and refill our waters. and it took a good 10mins before the brought us to go containers for our leftovers. good thing it was a lazy day and we were not in a hurry.as anita m mentioned, chef chen’s is a bit more expensive than your typical chinese food joint. all in all, chef chen’s is a decent spot to enjoy a leisurely lunch. i will definitely be back to try other items on the menu.
Best Chinese Restaurant in Irvine!. Beef Noodle soup, meat pie, beef sandwich (tastes better than it sounds), seafood in clay pot, and juicy dumplings! My comfort foods of choice. Not your typical greasy Chinese joint…I can’t get enough of this place!
