We have been to the Houston Springbok on numerous occasions and decided to try the original whilst in LA. We were not disappointed. The food was excellent and the service attentive. Kudos to Amanda G. The paella and chicken schnitzel were delicious. We will definitely be back the next time we are in LA. Cheers!
Not Impressed. If youre looking for a small, clean bar, then this place looked like a good bar to try. A late night, yummy dessert would also be good here.If youre looking for ethnic ambiance, dont come here. Theres plenty of South African decor, but the bar was blasting all kinds of American music and the big screens in the restaurant side were playing some kind of sports show. Its quiet enough on the restaurant side that you can talk, but it would have been nice to hear some SA music, too. Service was good. Waitress gave us enough space. Given that I dont require a lot of attention during my meals, her coming by twice to check on us was enough.I ordered the Chicken PeriPeri. While I’ve never had SA food before, Id say that, although it was tasty in terms of seasoning, the glue-y, gummy, floury coating on the chicken made it significantly less appealing. Perhaps if they just sauteed the chicken (without its floury coating) and tossed it in the sauce, it would have been significantly tastier. The cole slaw was VERY mayonaise-y… not really my preference, and their side salad’s dressing was okay. i think the best part of my dish was the taste of the PeriPeri sauce with the crunch of the french fries. Usually, I prefer salad, but I’m glad I didnt shell out $10 for their dinner size salads based off of the taste of their sides.Best part about my meal was dessert. We had the milk tart (?). I would definitely go back for more of that. For $5, you get a big piece of silky tart. Not too sweet. Not at all with any greasy, buttery aftertaste. Just milky vanilla custard in a tender, flaky crust, with just the right amount of cinnamon on top. Delish!
