Closed? Hardly. And definitely worth finding.. I don’t know if they were closed briefly earlier this year or what, but they are definitely open for business. This is one of those hidden treasures. You can drive by it daily and never realize it is there. It is on Blackstone, just south of the railroad tracks and just north of the Blackstone/Abby split, on the east side of the street, hidden between the many little industrial/commercial buildings there. When you think hole in the wall restaurant, sometimes you worry about cleanliness. And if you actually notice this place when driving by and look at the outside, you might have your doubts. Not a concern here, the place is super clean inside, and they obviously take a lot of pride in making sure it stays that way. Both indoor and outdoor seating is available. They smoke and grill outdoors, and the aroma is simply amazing. Prices are very reasonable, and you won’t feel like they skimp on the serving sizes. If you are going with a group of bbq loving people, get the Watts Riot, it will feed 4 to 6 people, and provides Ribs, Chicken, Pulled Pork, Tri-Tip and hot links. It will set you back $30, but for what you get, that price is cheap.Since I was alone though, I grabbed the 1/2 lb cheeseburger, which was a great value at $8.50 including fries. And it definitely did not disappoint. But I saw someone else eating the Mac and Cheese and Ribs and Beans, and wow, did it look good. They make the mac and cheese entirely homemade, no pre-bought cheese sauce. And the ribs were bathed in their own homemade bbq sauce.
Just went to Watts Family Grill for about the fourth time and, while it gets better each time I go, tonight it reached excellence. The ribs were smoked to perfection, based on both taste and a deep pink smoke ring. Each bone was meaty, without an excess of fat, and each bite was seasoned perfectly and pulled easily off the bone without falling off on it’s own. The outside had a perfect amount of char and was drizzled with a delicious sauce. To keep this from turning into a novel, I’ll just say that my family and I had ribs, fried catfish, french fries (freshly cut), mac-and-cheese, baked beans, and yams. All were delicious. We had no room for desert, though they have that too.Last, and not at all least, the service was as exceptional as the ribs. We were greeted before we ever set foot in the place, by an employee (family member?) who happened to be in the parking lot when we walked in. The lady behind the counter is always friendly, hospitable, and has always been willing to help figure out the best way to order so that everyone in the group gets what they want. Our glasses stayed full, we were thanked more than once for coming in, my kids were offered a piece of candy, and someone adjusted the thermostat and turned off a ceiling fan when they noticed my daughter’s arms wrapped around herself.Okay, I lied, THIS will be last. Do not let the neighborhood or the outside of the place fool you. Park in the back, walk through the back door, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the contrast between the rough outside and the nicely done interior.
I wen last week. I was dubious because of the looks of the place. Talk about a sleeper! Not flashy but what a fantastic BBQ place. Incredible sauce. I had the 2 way combo with ribs and links. The links were spicy and phenomenal! They have smoke down to an art. Lots of places to watch a game from and all at a great price. Try the rice. It’s the best fried rice in town!
Had the chicken, ribs, tri tip, hot links, and beans. Sauce was good. Liked the ribs and chicken the most
Great place. Pulling into the parking lot surrounded by junk cars and engine parts made me wonder, but once inside, this place is great. They have done an excellent and the food is great. The pulled pork is yummy and the list of sides is a meal in itself. A real stand up barbecue place with choices, great taste and service. A must try.
Smells as good as it tastes. While on a recent business trip to Fresno, I was looking for a locally-owned restaurant to try. I decided on Watts Family Grill. As soon as I got out of my car, I had a good feeling about this place. The smell from the street was delicious. I ordered the one way combo with hot links, mac and cheese and greens. It was quite good, and I’m looking forward to trying their other dishes in the future.
