KANES-What a disappointment!. I took my elderly parents to Kanes in March 2012 as a special treat to celebrate my dads birthday, as well as his survival of cancer treatment.A friend had given me a $100 Kanes gift certificate toward the celebration, my friend had paid $100 to buy the gift certificate, it was not discounted. We arrived for our reservation and were seated fairly quickly, but it was a loud atmosphere and a bit cramped, but we didn’t mind we were there to celebrate. There were four of us and we all ordered very expensive dishes, nothing that was on special. As the food arrived and we started eating we all noticed that different parts of our dishes were ice cold, my fathers garlic mashed potatoes were cold, so we asked the waiter if he could bring us some that were hot, he questioned the temperature, made odd faces at my father, smirked, and then finally went to get hot mashed potatoes very reluctantly, he was quite rude when I think about it, not at all accommodating or cordial like other restaurants. I then noticed that my lobster with risotto was also ice cold, and the lobster was not properly cooked it was half raw, I mentioned it and my elderly mother pointed out that her dish was almost all bone and nearly no meat and also ice cold potatoes! We decided not to complain any more after the way the waiter had acted when we told him the potatoes were ice cold. We finished our dinner and had coffee, and then the worst began– I went to pay the check (It was close to $200 total) and I included the $100 gift certificate along with my credit card– The waiter brought it back and practically yelled that they would not take any gift certificate because it was St Patricks Day—REALLY??? I didn’t know that was a national holiday, and after all, we were celebrating a birthday— so I asked to talk to the manager, AMY— It got worse, she waved the gift certificate around in front of customers making a huge scene saying that they would not accept their own gift certificate because it was a holiday while rolling her eyes at me, as though I was an idiot, and dirt under her feet. I once again politely explained to her that we were there for a birthday and could she make an exception and she laughed in my face with a very childish attitude and a smirk and told me NO! I then asked if I could speak to the owner, my elderly parents by this time were very upset and embarrassed at how the waiter and the manager had treated us— the manager told me NO that I was not going to talk to the owner, he was busy and SHE had the final word. I walked up to Mr Kane and told him I would be calling him regarding substandard treatment and service in his restaurant. I paid the bill and will never return. I also disposed of the $100 useless gift certificate because I would never want anyone else to ever be treated so poorly again. I run a large Corporation, and I take clients out for dinners often in Nevada and Placer counties. I would NEVER take a client to Kanes even if there were not another restaurant around, and I certainly will never take any friends or family to Kanes ever again.Bottom Line: Kanes in Grass Valley is overpriced, the food is substandard, the seating is not private or comfy, the service is absolutely the worst I have ever been treated to in any restaurant, and that is saying a lot. ALL OF THIS reflects on the owner, Mr. Kane, because to have such a deplorable staff and manager is 100% the fault of Mr. Kane, as is the substandard quality of the food served to the table. Save your money do not waste it at Kanes, if you want to be treated with graciousness and fine food and ambiance go the The Holbrooke Hotel Grass Valley, or Friar Tucks in Nevada City, they are both 100% consistently Excellent!

Wow. Interesting for me to see these bad reviews. My experience here was very refreshing, as I have been in the area for years and continually overlooked Kanes. My dinner was wonderful. We truly enjoyed our service, with a team oriented wait staff and a very proffesional and attentive head waiter. The rack of lamb entree and filet mignon entree that we ordered was exceptionally well prepared and presented well with thoughtfully prepared sides. Our complete dinner with tax and a $30 bottle of wine came to $100 and change. We chose to tip well.

Overpriced. Food is mall quality at best. My crab and artichoke melt had kraft singles on it. Salad was brown iceberg with dressing that tasted like it came out of a bottle. Service was just fine, but others have said differently. Basically, don’t go here… There are MUCH better choices in town for the same or less money.

Over priced for the quality of what you get. There are better choices in town.
