This new place is performing way above the San Diego weight class. Based on three visits I rate it equal to the long established Mazza (two locations) in Salt Lake City. Sure if you just want meat with a dollop of vegetables, you can get by at a Luna Grill but if you enjoy vegetables, Calibanzo is excellent. I highly recommend the following appetizers / salad: fried cauliflower, which is a tricky vegetable to do right, Moroccan carrot salad, the baladi eggplant, and the babaganoush. Their falafels are addictive, the salads better than average, the dolmas average.Calibanzo prepares seven varieties of hummus. All are served with top quality olive oil. The pine nuts in the pine nut variety were very fresh. We also tried the hummus with ground lamb, also very tasty. The hummus dishes all come with excellent freshly prepared laffa bread. I wish they would bring it to the table in a napkin lined basket though so it didn’t cool so quickly. Laffa refills are forthcoming but I eat it quicker than the waitstaff notices.Meat from the charcoal grill is served on large skewers which do a good jobs of conducting heat the center of each piece for even cooking. And you feel like a king with it in front of you.Drinks include iced tea, mint tea, and Turkish Coffee. Maybe I can talk them into adding the cardamom iced tea I miss from Mazza. The interior is modern mountain west, spacious with a high ceiling, and middle eastern decorative touches, not exactly cozy but still rather pleasant.
