Helen takes care of business!. Helen is a busy chinese bee! She moves about her little place with authority and good cheer. I saw the reviews for this place and decided to have it for dinner on this summer sunday. We were only two people so now I know we overdid it by ordering way to much. They say the formula is one main entree per person plus a small soup and appetizer? Reviewers for this place were generous and as my rating states, I mostly must agree and thank each and everyone that took the time. Here is the scope: Started with their fried wontons with cream cheese, very similar to those at pick up styx. They were okey and should have not ask for them but some reviewer said they were to die for, which I disagree. They were average at best, but fresh and deep fried hot.Next: we ordered the Wonton soup which came with a lot of crispy vegetables (another reviewer had mentioned they did vegetables al dente and never mushy) I thought that they were, if anything, somewhat underdone. Lots of broccoli, cabbage, beautifully sliced carrots, super soft chicken (a cut above in tenderness and presentation) wontons made out of ground chicken (Helen informed us). fresh mushrooms and a few very tasty shrimps. We also made a mistake by ordering the large version instead of the small one (greedy little mouths) but overall the chicken broth looked clean and had its own appealing flavor.Next: We ordered the Chef’s Special 3 meats (Beef, Chicken, Shrimp) saut in a semi delicate sauce. I wanted the Kung Pao version by my female companion would have banned the decision anyways, but it was tasty and was offered once again with plenty of veggies cooked al dente.Next: Shrimp with cashews. As one may noticed we had a particular inkling for all things shrimp. The shrimp in this place is very tasty and it is bigger than most other places and following what appears to be their fine tradition, plenty of them (which I applaud over and over!) and must congratulate the way they came, perfectly cooked.Next: Shrimp fried rice. I had read that their shrimp fried rice was very tasty and had to try it. Did mention to Helen the good comments about it, to make her feel almost obligated to deliver generous amounts. Tasty fried rice, really!Next: House Special Chow Mein (soft noodles) and my lovely companion had positive comments for this dish, such as: noodles did not stick together, nice taste, freshly made apparently. I tried a little (it is one of the last things I would order, but hey, everyone has their own favorites when it comes to chinese food) and I did like it for it had Beef, Chicken and you guessed it: more shrimp!Halfway through the ordeal we realized our eyes had been much bigger than our mouths and take out containers were requested.I liked the place! Small restaurant but with plenty of ethnic decoration and there is something very mystifying about the chinese culture in general and there are so many provinces as well. This one, like the name clearly states, is from Shanghai. Helen and another older lady that could be her sister, mother, cousin, it don’t matter were prompt in delivering and efficient during our visit. Yes, I agree, I would have never found this little place unless I ask the question: where is the tastiest chinese in Orange County. Overall they deserve 4 Stars, there were more things good about the place than wrong things. Helen (what a great name for a chinese lady) presented us with a bill of $52+ and with the 15% came out to around or close to $60. Yes, we overdid it and I realize I have no will power sometimes when it comes to chinese food but I also realize that I have gone to several places, even more expensive, and Shanghai Place is an honorable eatery. Thank you for the reviews that allowed us to find this place in the first place. Is to people that takes the time and don’t play around with opinions that are sincere and helpful, that all the credit is due. 4 Stars for Shanghai Place and if you ever decide to go, make sure to call Helen in advance, and like I did, tell her that you heard their Shrimp Fried Rice is better than most because they put a lot of shrimp. That ways Helen will not hesitate to present it at its best upon arrival. She certainly runs a tight ship, very clean and the food is better than most!
