Sizzler did not sizzle. Insipid, drab, ho-hum, overpriced. These are some of the adjectives that comes to mind when thinking about our night out to eat at Sizzler, in Murrieta Hot Springs Road, Murrieta, CA. Once again I read some of the reviews that said this place had re-invented itself, after the sad demise of its hey days back a couple of decades ago. There was a time where going to Sizzler was not a bad idea, and their food line up was competitive, and yes, tasty. Nostalgia made me contemplate this place again, which I have not gone back since early 80’s. After reading the many thumbs up reviews, how they had improved their game, and the overall satisfaction of dozens of people in the Temecula and Murrieta area, I made the trip thinking only positive outcomes. The place was packed to the brim, absolutely full at 7:45 PM. A small line awaiting their turn to order and pay before taking their seats to eat, a familiar formula that has not changed. A party of 2 people, one very sweet lady, and one soon to be very sour male. Ordered:Fish and Chips, with all you can eat buffet, senior price $14.99. Fish and Chips were simply average, not extraordinary by any means. A little vinegar, and plenty of tartar sauce helped minimize the lack of of quality in this dish. 2 Stars.Steak and Lobster, $29.99. Steak was supposed to be ribeye, and according to cashier when I commented on the high price, a ultra delicious cut of meat, which at the time helped to make the decision to buy it. Ordered it medium rare going on medium, which cashier happily let me know it was her favorite way of cooking it. Needless to say, she was cheerful and highly protective of the franchise, which was to be expected. The lobster was supposed to be around 6 oz., and I knew it was going to be from local waters for sure, no Maine or Australian, that is for sure. Baked potato with all the makings included in the dish, and for an additional close to $6, also had the buffet soup and salad included. Steak was a disaster, arrived between warm and cold, meat with plenty of inedible parts, and not even half a bottle of steak sauce made it any better. Lobster very tiny, undercooked and plain cold, another very expensive disaster. Potato inside aluminum foil, was small covered with butter, chives, sour cream, edible. Yes, I could have said no, I think my meal sucks, I like to return the whole thing please, but I did not. 1 Star.Rolls were tasty, with plenty of whipped butter, had Flower, our waitress give us a few to take home, which she obliged so graciously we recognized that her service had been the best part of the whole meal. Salad bar, soup, chicken wings, onion rings, some pasta, meatballs, beans, hard shells and taco meat, were absolutely plain with no redeeming qualities, nothing to write home about. Salad was spotty in their different selections, and sides all the familiar options, most from a can. 2 Stars.Bill came to over $57 without counting gratuity, which we happily dispensed to Flowers, who throughout our meal seemed to know how disappointed the meal was turning out to be.Coffee lukewarm, and not very good. Ice cream on a cone imitation, not real, bread pudding edible. Service above average, and we left feeling that spending that kind of money for what we had gotten, was a definitive fiasco. Tremendous support for this establishment proves the axiom that contends that not all people are the same when it comes to taste, preferred colors, or authors. This Sizzler is below the Home Town Buffet in the pecking order, and that right there is saying a lot against it. Not to return for at least 2 more decades. 2.5 Stars.
