Local Favorite a Bit Disappointing. We visited Market on the last day of a nine-day trip to California that has us in the Napa Valley wine tasting the last four days of the trip. We were exhausted when we arrived and kind of full. We decided to go light and get a few appetizers. We started off with oysters on the half shell. We had them earlier in the week at another restaurant (Fish Story in Napa). These oysters were not nearly as good and were very small.Fortunately, the restaurant recovered nicely with a dish called Ahi Two Ways ($16). The first tuna was a tartare with a soy truffle vinaigrette the second was spiced, seared and served on a brioche crostini. While the taste was fantastic, it was a very small serving size. I wanted two more of each but that would have been another $32. We completed the meal by sharing a Chopped Market Salad ($12) that featured seasonal vegetables, blue cheese, egg, bacon, avocado and mustard vinaigrette. We were disappointed by this dish in that the seasonal vegetable were cauliflower and broccoli, probably others. But the taste and mouth feel was graining from the cauliflower and stalky from the broccoli. Normally we love chop salads and this was a disappointment.Market is a local favorite and does not charge a corkage fee, rare in the valley. It has beautiful stone and mirrors on the walls and is long and thin. Tables are in a row in the bar portion of the restaurant with a bench on one side and chairs on the other. Wood floors up front, carpet in the back. Great ambiance. I think there are a lot of good choices in St. Helena to eat at, I would be inclined to try one of them before returning. Our experience may not be indicative of the norm. The place was almost packed by 5:30.
What a great place to stop for dinner after a day visiting the vineyards. Great service, atmosphere, and food. The baby back ribs were fantastic. Prices are very reasonable. Not to loud and a no rush atmosphere.
