Dirty dirty dirty!!! Sandwich was huge but, if you only take one bite….. Well you get my point.
This place is amazing. Every time I go it gets better and better. You can easily split a half sandwich for 2. And don’t forget to try the Reese’s cake! Delicious!
Good veggie sandwich. Try it on chiabatta bread on or on their dutch crunch.
Best sandwiches in town by far. Absolutely amazing.
Cherry Cannoli (dish review). I love cherries, have a thing for ricotta, and die at the sight of chocolate. This 6-inch long beast had all of the above/ Still, Compagnos’ version of the Italian-classic fell remarkably short of expectations. For one, the ricotta was bitter, not sweet, and killed the perfectly-done cookie exterior. In addition, the whole dessert came looking as if it had already been to the under-land and back; the cookie was broken and filling spilled off into the to-go box. Though Compagnos’ is a sure favorite, their cannoli need some tender loving care before I’ll order one again.05 Jan, 2013Special Forces Sandwich (dish review). The Special Forces from Compagno’s is a heavenly, yet frighteningly muddled, plate of food. Wrapped in a delicious bread bun of your choice (I recommend the dutch crunch), this sandwich features a full chicken breast, six slices of prosciutto, a pile of cheese, a carton of mayo and mustard, and a lovely assortment of vegetables (if you so choose). Though the steaming-hot chicken and coating of provolone is welcomed with open mouth and empty stomach, the prosciutto is frankly overpowering, with it’s in-your-face meaty flavor blasting the less exciting bird out of the water. Also, be careful on the vegetables you ask for, as a little lettuce and tomato translates to two handfuls of iceberg and a whole roma.05 Jan, 2013Compagnos Deli (Italian/Sandwiches). Compagnos is, arguably, the best of Monterey. Santa Cruz’s lesser-known sister city has a food scene almost as bad as San Jose’s, yet manages to still hide a few gems (like this one) away from the common tourist. Don’t worry about crowds; Compagno’s resides in hilly a residential district surrounded by parking. It is far enough from the aquarium and downtown to fend off the hoards of fish-lovers and surfers. Inside you’ll find an intriguing assortment of armed forces memorabilia (fitting, given across the street is Monterey Presidio) and craft beers from around the world (assorted by nation on the far wall). The highlight of this place, though, is the food. Gigantic, diet-smashing sandwiches pour from Compagno’s kitchen. Each is made up of massive heaps of protein on your choice of freshly-baked bread. Whether you order the popular Italian Sausage or one of their signature armed forces specials, what you receive will be delicious and far-too filling for the common human to inhale. Also featured is a case filled with gigantic cakes and cannoli. Each cake is nearly a foot tall and wide, and for just a few dollars a monstrous slice or finger-pastry can be yours. I highly recommend Compagno’s for the hungry individual.Rating: 7.3/10 tasteperiod.blogspot.com
Legen-dary Sandwiches. Went to Compagnos on a whim looking for decent tasting sandwiches, boy was I in for a treat! The owner Bennett, immediately introduced himself and assured me I had come to the best sandwich place in town. He proceeded to ask the boys behind the counter to make the biggest sandwich I have ever lied eyes on (and it was only a half sandwich). We talked for a long while, and prior to checking out he demanded I take a piece of cake home. Bennett gave me a slice of cake bigger than most adult heads. The deli meats, the cheese and the veggies were super fresh and high quality. I’m def coming back. Bennett is a true American patriot.
A Monterey Institution. Trust me–there’s a reason this place is a Monterey institution. All the sandwiches are fresh and delicious. This is not your typical Subway sandwich. The meat and cheese are top quality (none of that weird compressed slop they pass off as meat). Simply put, these are first class deli classics all the way. And the desserts are every bit as amazing.
