Wonderful Wedding Day Feast!. My husband and I were recently married in San Diego, and we decided to have a low-key dinner with close friends at El Comal. I emailed them about a month prior, and through that correspondence they helped us to create a menu and meal plan for our party. We had about 18 people, and our menu consisted of the botanas sampler (meat and veggie), queso fundido con chorizo (con hongos for the vegetarians), four main entrees to choose from (barbacoa de chivo, cochinita pibil, chile relleno, and mole poblano), and drinks. First off, they had everything planned and ready to go for us. We showed up and our tables were set and reserved, with menus printed. When the majority of our party had arrived, they brought out the botanas. I LIVE for the queso fundido con chorizo, especially eaten with the tortillas de maiz made in house. I had the cochinita pibil and the pork was perfect and juicy. I love the tang of the sauce. My husband had the mole, which they make from scratch. It’s delectable. I also managed to snag some of my friend’s chile relleno. The egg batter was flavorful and didn’t separate, as I’ve experienced at other restaurants. Also, it was dripping with delicious cheese. I love cheese, by the way 🙂 All in all, the meal couldn’t have been better. But alas, it did get better. The service. What can I say that will convey our pleasure and gratitude towards the incredible service? I regret not taking note of our server’s name because she was simply incredible. I felt as if my own mother had taken charge and was feeding all of her children. We felt cared for and taken care of. She took time to speak with us and know us for that brief moment. On our way out, she gave us a wonderful hug and wished us luck on our journey as a married couple. Because of the well-planned event, and the food, and the heartfelt service, I can’t recommend El Comal enough. Thank you for making our day so special. Gracias por todo!

This place was the most authentic Mexican food I have in years. Bravo.
I had the chicken enchiladas with green sauce. Delicious! The salsa is fabulous, too.
The food here is fabulous. Homemade tortillas like my abuela used to make. Chiliquiles were perfect. Nice residential area. It was worth the drive from gaslamp.
