Review for Dinner:Must:-The Smoking Goat Meatballs appetizerGood:-Escargot appetizer-Goat Cheese Cheesecake-Local, organic, and sustainable ingredients-family owned and operatedBad:-main entres a little boring-Aspen Ridge 10oz. Steak Frites came out a little tough*The Smoking Goat is an elegant dinner place tucked away in North Park, a foodie wonderland. The Smoking Goat was San Diego Mag’s critic’s pick for best neighborhood restaurant in San Diego for 2015. Also, The Smoking Goat is a family owned and operated restaurant that is dedicated to using local, organic, and sustainable ingredients. The appetizers and desserts were amazing. If you don’t mind chewy textures then the escargot is worth a try. The buttery and herbal flavors were sensational, especially on the supplied bread. The goat cheese cheesecake tasted homemade and not too strong nor exotic. The smoking goat meatballs are ground goat, lamb, pork, and beef in a marinara sauce. This is basically an umami explosion! The main entres were good, but they weren’t anything as exciting as the appetizers or dessert offerings. The Aspen Ridge 10oz. Steak Frites came out a little tough too unfortunately. Overall, worth checking out. instagram.com
I left here feeling a bit underwhelmed by their famous duckfat truffle fries, and totally blown away by a salad. Yeah…no one is more surprised than I am.That being said, I’d still recommend ordering the fries. They were good, just not the great, amazing, life-changing experience I’d been told they would be. HOWEVER, the pear and bleu cheese salad was amazing. I don’t usually love frise, but the flavor combination totally made the greens irrelevant. We ended the meal with the griddled banana bread, which was excellent. My friend loved her salmon dish, too. Overall, we ate some very good food, and left happy 🙂 thejewskimo.com
Cool Venue, Good Food, Overpriced. The Smoking Goat adds a unique new culinary experience to the NP scene. Fresh ingredients and stellar meats fill the menu. Duck fat fries butress the appetizer selections and should not to be missed. As for the entrees, I have tried three or four, but the Ribeye stands out – it provides excellent flavor and tenderness and, blessedly, comes with the fries. My most recent trip included the house dessert, fried banana bread, which was top notch. The atmosphere fits in well with North Park – small and intimate, hosted by a well-mannered flannel-shirt clad young man with a hat (which some snootier folks may disapprove of given the price point for this place, but it gave us no pause), and service comes from a knowledgable, jeaned chap with good recommendations. On the downside, the menu lacks diversity and is overpriced. Only one salad on the appetizer menu and it centers around beets, a veggie loved by some but detested by many – a poor choice for a solo salad selection. Not too many options on the dinner menu either, although most very tasty. Note the menu changes often as well, so that helps a bit. The prices seem quite high – $29 for a steak, $26 for salmon or a pork chop – very hard to order one appetizer and one entree each for a couple and not spend $100, even without wine. With so many excellent restaurants in San Diego these days, many with entrees in the $15-20 range, this upscale bistro may fall into the category of a one night stand for many – but a good one night it will be.
Excellent. I went there last night and was very impressed the sevice and staff was very friendly . I had the burger it was perfect and the duck fat fries were to die for….. I would definitely go back , they have a menu that changes all the time….LOVE IT
