Fusing heaven and West Oakland. Every one of the 15 or so dishes we tried in this remarkable, stylishly industrial space was simple and delicious, and most were as original as they were successful. Examples: bacon mochi; arugula salad with miso-pickled cream cheese; fava beans coated with a little oil and Parmesan; and a six-item kimchi plate. Caution: the dishes range from small to minuscule. But individual items are priced as low as $1, and three of us ate for $30. Three desserts (tempting, starting with beignets) would have added another $5 or $10. The place is new and as of 8/22/2012 is open only on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and only for lunch. They plan to expand to normal hours; and to accept credit cards, but for now only cash and checks are accepted.The place was bustling, but we waited just 5 minutes for a table, and every table was taken for the whole time we were there. The staff are cordial, knowledgeable, and–unusual for such a new place–totally in control. But the most unusual thing about the wait staff was their number: half a dozen waiting on maybe 15 tables. Despite the bustle, we were really well attended to from beginning to end.This is a gem of a place. Let’s hope it stays that way for a while!
