Fleur de Sel (dish review). Cupcakes have become a love of mine in recent months, following years of banning them from my diet. I was previously unaware how amazing cupcakes could be, but now, after dining at three top-class factories, I am part of their world. This is a creation from Kara’s, one of those three. A fudge topping and a rich chocolate base is enough to make me fall head over heels – for a chocolate cupcake. This one was billed as salted caramel, and though both elements were there, they played minimalistic roles. The caramel was entirely hidden away inside the center of the cupcake, while the sea salt was haphazardly tossed on top. If this was supposed to be chocolate, it would have been killer, but when you read the words ‘fleur de sel’, you think of something entirely different.18 Mar, 2012#550 – Kara’s Cupcake Karavan (Cupcakes/Dessert). Kara’s, the notoriously tasty cupcake truck, has lived up to it’s sweet reputation. Though not quite as good as billed, it is satisfying enough to take third in my personal ‘Great Cupcake Race’. I feasted on the salted caramel, an affordable creation at just two dollars. I expected a caramel or vanilla cupcake with a buttercream frosting and caramel center with a nice drizzle (I know, a lot of expectations). What I received was a chocolate base topped with fudge cream and no drizzle, though the center was as predicted. I must say, I prefer the first of the choices. This one, though delectable, was too rich. The chocolate overwhelmed the caramel, which was supposed to be the star of the show. Contributing to the confusion was a large sprinkling of sea salt that added little to the dessert. In conclusion, I believe Kara’s needs work, simply put. It had all the necessary components of greatness, but could not get it’s act together in the end. Rating: 5.1/10 tasteperiod.blogspot.com

The sweet vanilla cupcake is my…. The sweet vanilla cupcake is my personal fave. The buttercream frosting is so melt-in-your-mouth rich that I asked for a shot of it. They’re regular sized cupcakes and worth every penny. I also appreciate that they’re packed with flavor, moist and the frosting is smooth, not gritty. Fleur de Sel is my second favorite which gives you the salt you crave in the wave of sweetness it gives. The last time I went it was freezing and raining. Nothing was better than drinking french pressed Blue Bottle coffee and eating my cupcake. Happiness!!
