Exceptional service paired with amazing food. I got calamari as my appetizer and their halibut as my entree, which was one of their specials for the day. Everything tasted fresh and the flavors were phenomenal! The atmosphere was perfect for an intimate dinner and would serve well as a date night or a gathering with friends. I highly recommend coming here if you get the chance!

Overpriced California drivel. I went to St. Michael’s in early December 2013. Let me prefix this by saying I’m new to the Bay area so I don’t know if relatively speaking this place is good or not and I just concluded two+ years of life in Portland, a culinary mecca of sorts. The staff at St. Michael’s were very friendly, if not perhaps too attentive to be point of being a bit jarring. I had a reservation for the dining hall and they apologetically stated that the previous party was taking far longer than expected to eat so we were seated instead in a booth in the bar area. I had no issues from the perspective of ambiance but it was unseemly noisy. Honestly, one of the noisiest restaurant experiences I’ve ever experienced, to the point that I’d recommend they hire an acoustic engineer to install sound-absorbing tiles in there. The food was is worth a few a words if I can spare others the banality that is St. Michael’s cooking. Again, Portland standards, but I could scarcely believe how much I was spending for what amounted to a culinary trifle. The wild mushroom cake sounded wonderful — except that it was devoid of any real taste of mushroom. How is this possible? Wild mushrooms should be splendid. For entrees, my date got the petrale sole. We both agreed that it was a bit too fried, and the subtlety of the fish was lost on all that they tried to do with it. The squid ink pasta was good, though.I got the pan roasted duck. Really the tamest, least interesting duck dish I’ve had. I would have rather consumed BBQ duck from a dodgy Chinese meat vendor than this duck. The pomegranate sauce pairing, though it sounded good in theory, did not in any way resonate with me. The polenta goat cheese wedge was fine, but again, without inspiration. The green beans, though, were perfectly cooked and well seasoned. The waiter and our hostess both asked if it was our first time, to which we said yes, and I inquired if it was indeed some famous place, to which he replied: even celebrities have frequented the place. To which I would respond: let the celebrities pour away their cash on this and other flaccid foods — I will go elsewhere.
