Change is good. We used to go to Carmelitas years ago, and found the solid tex-mex standards well prepared and authentic, with a few nice surprises, like the chicken mole. Although OK, when other Mexican restaurants appeared, we drifted away as it was really nothing special. Several months ago we went back because our standby place was closed. Wow. What happened? The menu and food were really much more thoughtful, and even though the standards are still there, the recipes and execution are waaaay better, much more upscale, more a modern take on old favorites rather than the same old tex-mex.. We love it and have since been back several times. The chips, salsa and bean dip are good enough to make a meal on. The chicken mole is still on the menu as enchilada style, and the mole is rich and delicious. The Verde sauce is unique and full of flavor, not watery but vibrant. All the ingredients on the dishes we tried are fresh, and everything is just well prepared and well presented. Portions range from satisfying to huge, and the bar makes a strong tasty margarita. Service is fast, friendly and attentive, and while the prices are up a couple of bucks from the old days, it still ranks as a bargain restaurant in our book. The changes made at Carmelitas were all for the better. Upscale Mexican style that tastes great? You bet.

Definition of authentic. All of the traditional dishes, made the way they were intended. My wife can go just for the chips and salsa…and margaritas. Their house margaritas are good, but I go with the El Jefe, tasty and strong. And to compliment the good food and drinks, much of the staff is ownership or family of, so they care about your experience. I also love putting my money into local business, so they get my mexican food dollar.
