Good and cheap Chinese eats!. Dooooood! this place was good!we hit up three family village after church on a scorching sunday. luckily, the a/c was going full blast as we walked into the hong kong plaza. thank you lord!! we arrived around 1pm and the restaurant was approximately 3/4 full and we snagged an 8 top…..even though we only had four people. without blinking an eye, the manager/proprietress brought over the menus and told us to take our time.first thing to note is that a lot of the specials are plastered on signs affixed to the walls……..in chinese. doh! sucks to you if you can;t read chinese,…well, sucks to be me because i cannot read chinese. lol. luckily a fluent mandarin speaker/reader was with us and took the helm in ordering up the specials. score, xiao long bao’s (10 count) for a mere $2.99!! this is seriously a steal!!well, let me back up, this is what we ordered:- lamb stew with fermented cabbage: this was a great rendition of the dish. my only experience with this dish has been at china islamic restaurant. the rendition at three family village kicks china islamic’s ass! not only does the version at three family village consist of extremely tender chunks of lamb (vs the cheap shaved lamb you see at ayce hot pot places) but the fermented cabbage was nice and tangy. with each sip of the broth you can taste the lamb which pairs so well with the tanginess from the fermented cabbage.- pan fried green onion pancake stuffed with beef: a bit oily for my taste but the dish tasted good. the meat filling was a nice surprise.- fish fillets in black bean sauce: i did not try this as i was not in the mood for fish that afternoon, it looked and smelled pretty darn good though.- stir fried gourd: very nice. the gourd was cooked very well, firm and was seasoned well. a lot of times when i order this dish, the gourd is overcooked and turns into a mushy mess or it is over salted and loaded with msg.- xiao long bao: this was a grand surprise. as mentioned above, the dish was listed in chinese on the wall. we added this dish after we placed the original order and boy am i glad we did. the xlb bursted with juice and the filling was tasty and the wrapping was a cross between the one at din tai fung and mei long village…..basically, not too thin and not too thick. very good i must say….very good!service was very efficient and friendly. prices are very very reasonable as well. by the time we left (@2pm), the place was full of other folks noshing away….a sign that you are at a good chinese joint.i will be back for more xlb and lamb stew. mmmm!
