San Marcos can cook Chinese!. We find ourselves staying in San Marcos, Ca, and of course the first thing we are going to do is try their best eating places. So at the Residence Inn by Marriot where we are staying they gave us a piece of paper with several local restaurants, in groups according to how far they are from the hotel. For some reason we, as a group, always seem to crave chinese food first, but we know how rare a good chinese place is. So we went to China Wokery. The establishment looked nice, and were greeted at the door by the host/manager. Found out that the place has been opened 17 years. That is a stretch. Before we entered the place for the first time, a senior couple (was around 5:30 PM) was exiting the place, and I rolled my window and asked bluntly if they liked the place. Probably locals, they both responded with the adjective: Wonderful. We were in. Our waiter, native from china, which we liked a lot to see because it showed the roots, told us the cuisine was Mandarin and Schezuan, or something to that effect. Plates ordered:Won Ton Soup $3.75, one person bowl. Soup arrived lukewarm, won tons a disappointment for they lacked any meat, broth mediocre at best. A serious turn off. 1.5 Stars.House Soup for two $8.45?, which consisted of asparagus, chicken, egg drop, plenty of cornstarch. Slightly better than the won ton, but by now the alerts sirens were going off in our heads. Had we landed on a very mediocre Chinese place? 2.5 Stars.Salt and Pepper Chicken $12.95? This one arrived very crispy but also in very small chunks, with rare exceptions of bigger ones, deep fried I would imagine with salt and pepper condiments. The bigger pieces a lot more tastier for that is where the chicken meat could be found, the smaller pieces a little more disappointing, for I always believe that the batter that covers the fish sometimes is the only thing one ends up eating. Kind of like, Where is the Chicken? But it turned out pretty darn tasty, and we I commented to our young Chinese server that I would have preferred bigger chunks of chicken instead of the little ones, he assured me that it could have been done, that most people liked it the way it was served, but they could accommodate bigger pieces. Nicely fried, a positive turn in our table. 3.5 Stars.Spicy Crispy Fish $16?, this one arrived with a sweet coating, in a very nice size serving (like the other dish), and was devoured in no time, for one could tell that their forte was indeed in all things concerning the Wok. Crispy and sweet on the outside, tasty fish in the inside. 4 Stars.Shrimp Fried Rice $12.95. This one was a nice serving, plenty of tender plump shrimp, with all the makings of a decent fried rice. Been a while since I enjoyed a fried rice, and everyone agreed with me. Noticed, as I stretched my neck to see the cooks in the open kitchen, that it was a Chinese cook doing the work. Not like Pick Up Styx that only hires mexican to cook their Chinese food. No disrespect intended, but if I go to a mexican restaurant the last person I want to see cooking my food is a Chinese wanna be. Very tasty fried rice. 4.5 Stars.Service was very efficient, but the place was 7 tables full, out of at least 25 it seemed. Nice server. Our dismal beginning with both soups, turned into a victorious finale with the last 3 dishes.Total was around $60 plus, almost $70 out the door with 15% gratuity. San Marcos knows how to do the china fare rather nicely.

Food. I agree with some reviews that the food here is only fair. Also expensive for a Chinese restaurant. Why don’t we have a really good Asian restaurant in No. County? Also wish we had a dim sum restaurant-have yo go to San Diego for that.

Not sure about these other reviews regarding the food but I have never had a bad thing here. Every time without fail I order something with substitutions. They do it right and perfectly everytime. Everyone is super nice there. Yeah, their English isnt great but when you’re hoping for authentic cuisine, is that really a problem? Only drawback for me is the egg rolls tend to be a bit greasy for me but they are delicious. Try the veggie mushu. Soooo gooood! Add bean sprouts.

Ordered take-out. The chicken with Cashews was okay. The steamed dumplings were cool – they must have been steamed well before everything else, and tasted like the pot stickers I could have bought myself at Costco. The Chicken with Curry was acceptable. Overall, the food was fair-good. Prices are too high to be just fair. We recently moved here from Maryland, where for about half the price you could get better food from a local take-out. Won’t go back.

I ordered the sweet and sour chicken. It tasted like lighter fluid was poured on to it, not an overstatement! I am pregnant so I asked my friends to check. Nope. They tasted the lighter fluid as well. Our waitress got the manager for us and he couldn’t understand what we were saying. His English was greatly lacking. Once I said it tastes like gas, he told me that it was supposed to taste like that. The he said we had eaten half of it (which we hadn’t) so he couldn’t refund out money. After much arguing he gave us 50% off that dish only. I would rather eat at panda express.
