Dolcetto (Italian/Coffee). This brand new restaurant in Willow Glen unfortunately follows the trend so many promising new places before it did: intense hype, a bustling first two days, then bad food from there on out (think Opa, Vin Santo, Lou’s, Hay Market, Crepevine, and countless others). Dolcetto is quite attractive in appearance; lovely decoration and a unique paint job make the place seem inviting. The market portion of the shop is actually quite nice, earning the two stars above, as it features dozens of imported Italian products ranging from pastas to candies to preserves. Dolcetto’s cafe, however, is where it all goes wrong, and the eatery loses stars 3 through 5.First, there’s the food; what they call pizza is actually a piece of grilled lavash topped with crushed tomatoes and chilled prosciutto (they still charge $12 for it, though). The panini and baguette sandwiches are not much better, as they are all bread and no substance for nine bucks apiece. Dolcetto’s only saving grace as far as entrees go is the wide selection of salads, plates of vegetables and olive oil that are still overpriced, yet extremely refreshing on a hot day.Next comes the coffee and baked goods. Honestly, the coffee looks excellent, and smells excellent as well, and the prices per cup are the only reasonable prices you’ll find within Dolcetto’s four walls. The baked sweets, however, are not that great; every good is fresh, but is poorly made and (surprise!) expensive. The Torta Nocciole, a chocolate-hazelnut cake of sorts, is small, $4, soggy, and tasteless. All of the aforementioned food issues would not be so bad if the service was up to snuff. Unfortunately, the service is far worse than the food. No one looks like they want to be there, as each staff member serves with frowns and flippant glances. Not a single employee other than the woman I assume is the owner has a clue what is in each dish; I need to ask three different people before one can find a recipe book and tell me what is in the Panzanella Insalata. This is not how you run a restaurant, especially one that lacks a few Michelin stars.Rating: 3.5/10 tasteperiod.blogspot.com
