Tonkatsu (dish review). Tonkatsu — I love me some good deep fried pork, and few places make it better than Tomi. Here, the meat is tender and delicious, the breading fresh and crispy, and the sauce tangy and sour (in a good way). Unlike other restaurants who pound the Tonkatsu so thin it’s like eating a pork chip, Tomi keeps the meat about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick, allowing the natural juices to stay in play. Instead of over frying the protein beyond recognition, the chefs lightly batter and salt the meat before tossing it into the oil for a few quick seconds. When paired with a nice bowl of rice, side salad, miso soup, fresh tea, and a slice of orange, it is the perfect lunch for a reasonable $10 price tag.24 Jul, 2014Tomisushi (Japanese). Sushi is one of my deep, dark loves, and few places prepare it quite as well as this tiny joint tucked into the wall of Mitsuwa Martketplace. The food here is simply spectacular. Though I have never been to Japan myself, the guests I dine with have, and each said it reminded them of a Tokyo spot they once frequented and adored. If that isn’t high praise, I’m not sure what is. Sushi is obviously the thing to get, but don’t limit yourself by sticking just to rolls and fish. Tomi offers bento-style lunches including Tonkatsu, Gyoza, and Saba Shioyaki, so make it a meal by adding on a tray of cooked goodies. If you refuse to sample anything but raw seafood, I recommend the Saba (Mackerel), and Maguro (Tuna). The former is refreshing and slightly smoky, while the latter is subtle is and melts in your mouth. Food aside, the atmosphere, service, and prices are all excellent. Crowds can be extremely heavy, as Tomi is Mitsuwa’s flagship restaurant. Wait times can add up to two hours, but if you’re a lover of Japanese fare, the wait is worth it. This is my go-to restaurant for sashimi. Their sashimi lunch and dinner are the best. It’s a generous portion, the slices are thick, and most importantly, the fish always taste fresh. Another thing I always get there is their tomisushi special roll (with hamachi). It’s one of those restaurants where you need to splurge a little, but it’s totally worth it!

We are Japanese, raised on good sushi and this is REALLY GOOD sushi. Very authentic, very friendly staff and surprisingly inexpensive! We drove in from Monterey and it’s well worth the 1.5 hour drive. We’d make the drive just to eat here…and we are very picky and easily disappointed when it comes to sushi….this place does not disappoint!!
