San Luis Obispo is a lovely city and a welcome reprieve from the flat coastal plains I call home. The good news is that the restaurant scene here is every bit as lovely as the natural surroundings and a case in point is SLO Provisions, a restaurant located near downtown.SLO Provisions specializes in American style foods and desserts. They serve rotisserie meats, sandwiches, farm fresh salads, soups, and sweet treats such as pie and cookies. The restaurant emphasizes breakfast, brunch, and lunch. They serve dinner also, but the restaurant closes around 8 p.m. so you need to make sure to arrive in time if supper is your thing. I visited SLO Provisions for lunch and for my meal, I ordered a SLO Provisions Chicken Salad Sandwich, a tasty treat served with red onion marmalade on sourdough bread and topped with assorted veggies. I added one side item, deviled eggs, for a heartier meal. The people at SLO Provisions certainly believe in quality, as this was a well- made and presented sandwich with taste sensations not usually present in this type of food. Everything was very fresh, and I even liked the deviled eggs, which really says something because eggs arent really my thing. SLO Provisions has an atmosphere that is like that of a cafeteria. You place your order at the counter then wait for the food to arrive at your table. The lighting is soft, in large part because it isnt really necessary- the natural light from the large, unobstructed windows provides the light you need and since this is, after all, California, sunshine is a regular part of daily life. This makes the interior very bright and cheery. They serve beer and wine also, with a selection that isnt gigantic, but is still sufficient for a place of this size. And there are a few items of merchandise for sale to go, to complete your visit.SLO Provisions doesnt have an extensive menu, and that is good in many ways because it makes the dining decision that much easier. I like how they emphasize local sourcing and they do, indeed, take great care to make your dining experience as pleasant as possible. Parking can be an issue, as the parking spaces are limited. But SLO Provisions is still a very good choice for an afternoon meal and Im glad I took the time to visit. greatbeernow.com
