I visited Lillie Mae’s after hearing a lot about their Soul food. Though I hadn’t had any experience with Soul food to actually draw a comparison, I enjoyed it.Since the most famous Soul food I’d heard of was Chicken Waffles, I decided to try out 2 of their Chicken Waffles. One was their signature Chicken Waffles & another was the Plum Chicken Waffles. Among the two I enjoyed the Plum waffles more, since the Plum adds a good contrast to the fried chicken flavour. The service is quite good, and you get the vibe of a family restaurant from the service.
Disappointed. I saw the restaurant reviewed on ‘Check Please’ on Saturday, Jan 3rd, 2014. I went off my diet to so I could go to the Sunday brunch. Please take note… The ribs were burnt and dry, the chicken tasted like it had been cooked in old oil, the waffles were soft and cold, the macaroni was flat, someone did not add the salt to the water while cooking and the gravy for the biscuits was tasteless. Also, they offered margarine instead of butter. That is a no no in my book. I could not have been more disappointed along with my group. I was raised on southern food and it is easy to cook when you follow a few basic rules. We will not be back!!!!
Tried Lillie Mae’s for the first time today! Holy cow! This place is sooo good. It’s better than Mothers place in New Orleans! If you are jones’n for some southern comfort, run to Lillie Mae’s…you won’t be disappointed. They cook up some delicious southern food…it’s authentic, better than mom’s.
Pork Ribs (dish review). I thought I’d tried all the best ribs in San Jose before stopping at Lillie Mae’s. Boy was I wrong. LM’s ribs are large, meaty, cooked-to-perfection pieces of pork delight slathered in a sweet, homemade barbeque sauce. Each rib is seemingly better than the last, leaving the fullest of individuals starving for more after a single plate.21 Jul, 2013Catfish (dish review). Nothing beats Lillie Mae’s fried chicken, but the catfish comes pretty close. Each cornbread-battered piece of bottom-dweller bursts with flavor. The batter is crispy and delicious, making a normally mushy and disgusting dish far more than edible. With a side of tartar sauce and fries, Lillie Mae’s catfish is an ideal lunch, right for any day of the week.21 Jul, 2013Southern Fried Chicken (dish review). Lillie Mae’s chicken is, in a word, perfect. I know, I know, tacky cliche phrases won’t convince you to buy a basket of LM’s heavenly bird, so how about a testimony? I swear, under oath and on my grave, that this is the best fried chicken you will ever eat in the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara. Good enough? In all seriousness, Lillie Mae’s Southern chefs know what they’re doing. Each piece of nearly grease-less chicken comes in a delicious buttermilk-corn flour batter seasoned with spices like pepper, salt, and paprika. The recipe is so simple, it makes me wonder why most other joints don’t craft their meat the same way. A whole third of a bird is yours for just $12 at this stop; that price includes sides and a drink, making it one of the best meal-deals in town. Even better? You can go in on the weekends for chicken and waffles, the very same fried meat on top of house-made waffles that taste like fancy cinnamon French toast. Yum yum!21 Jul, 2013Lillie Mae’s House of Soul Food (Southern/BBQ). San Jose finally has an establishment capable of matching up with SF powerhouse Brenda’s Soul Food. Alright, that is, of course, and exaggeration; Brenda’s is far and away the better restaurant, but Lillie Mae’s certainly holds it’s own in this battle of Bay Area favorites. Every dish at LM’s comes out fast and piping hot, especially the fresh baked beans. The overwhelming favorite of most customers, however, is the PERFECT fried chicken – white meat yard bird cooked in a delicious buttermilk batter. Another top notch option are the pork ribs, pig sidings cooked for hours and slathered in a homemade barbeque sauce. The best part of this restaurant, though, is the combination of great service, atmosphere, and fair prices. The entire place is constructed out of wood boards, making it look like an enlarged outhouse from outdoors (appetizing, I know). Once inside, crafted signs and Southern accents overwhelm the first time visitor and transport even the most seasoned traveler back to Mississippi. I look forward to numerous return visits, though I cannot say my waistline has the same desire for more.Rating: 7.9/10 tasteperiod.blogspot.com

I ate french fries, ranch salad, fried fish. They also had mashed corn, cornbread and much more food that is soul good! I also enjoyed the unique design of the restaurants exterior and interior. The service was also pretty good. Overall, give this restaurant a try!Rating: 8.5/10 Excellent
