  Biggest pho I’ve seen. I was passing through the San Francisco Bay area for what might be the last time in my life, and one of the things I wanted to do was meet in person a guy whose political blog I’ve been reading for years. He likes pho (even though he’s Anglo) and he suggested Pho Thanh Long because he eats there a lot, and some of his Vietnamese friends like it. The restaurant, on the endless strip mall highway that is El Camino Real in the South Bay, looks nondescript from the outside, but it’s big, bright and clean inside.It’s always a good thing when you walk into an ethnic restaurant and there are a lot of people from that ethnic group eating there. On a rainy Saturday night, I saw lots of Vietnamese diners here, so +1 on that. The pho was OK, slightly sweet broth, and I didn’t get an MSG headache from it. Pho Thanh Long has several types of pho that I haven’t seen elsewhere, like the beef and vegetable variety I had. The most notable thing about it was the HUGE bowl the large size (only 75 more than the regular size, so I got it) comes in. You could wash your hair in that bowl! I couldn’t finish it.That was due in part to the spring rolls I ordered, which were fresh and well-constructed, but didn’t have much flavour, even when dipped in the accompanying peanut sauce. I wish I had ordered the Vietnamese pork chops or barbecue that I saw coming out to other tables, because they looked tasty.
