Lucky Find!. We climbed Bald Mountain Sunday (Dec 20), which involved 2000 feet rise in elevation, in about 2.8 miles from trailhead to summit. As we neared the top, the skies broke open and we were drenched. By the time we’d summitted and walked back to the trailhead, we were soaked from head to toe. How lucky, then, to remember the little restaurant at the turn-off to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, at the corner of Adobe & Sonoma Hwy. We got there around 3 p.m., worried it would be closed. Instead, we found a fireplace and a warm reception, a great glass of MacKenny Pinot and the kitchen at our ready. The owners’ son was staffing the place, because his parents took the weekend off for their birthdays. He stoked the fire for us, and had wine and then six impressive tapas plates on the table in the blink of an eye. We started with their world famous grilled artichoke, made all the better for the spicy dip; enjoyed their poki – some of the best I’ve ever eaten, a stuffed eggplant and feta creation, mushrooms in a flavored sauce that was so unbelievably delicious that I’d like a bowl of it for soup, and finally, beets with anchovies. I admit, my companion loved this, but, despite liking both beets and anchovies, I could have lived without it. At any rate, this place was a perfect apres-drench location, and we would go there again even if we weren’t wet!

Good food. But everything is ridiculously priced high. It is hard to leave this place without paying up the kazoo!
