Great little place right on the beach. Typical American style food on the menu. Service was friendly and attentive. Laid back Cali style. We are used of this coming from Australia. I’d go back. Sitting at the bar during happy hour is fun too.
Bad all around. First the service was virtually nonexistent. It took more than 10 minutes for our waiter to make an appearance just to tell us he’d be with us soon and then finally got back to us 10 minutes later ignoring us for the rest of the meal except to drop off food. I asked for medium garlic strip steak but got way well done, bland and dry and the potatoes were from a box. Really $30 for that? The salmon was stuffed with crab and had a red sauce but just tasted like typical salmon. The only good thing was the sourdough bread. People go here because its the first stop on the boardwalk and wharf so they are guaranteed 1 visit and don’t care about return customers. And that’s fine with me because I’ll never be back.
SERVICE IS PRETTY BAD. The service sucks…after that who cares :-/

Poor Service. New to the area, we have been eating at Ideal Bar & Grill almost every week and really enjoy the lobster until our last visit. A group of 6 of us decided to get a table outdoors on the patio. The service was lousy. Two tables of four left after a long wait to get their order while the waiters were laughing and chatting. Our order was wrong. As manager of an rv resort, I no longer recommend Ideal.
Nice server, good food. On a whim we went to Santa Cruz yesterday just to see what it looks like with no tourists, and for something to do. We ate lunch at Ideal Bar & Grill – I was surprised when I read the reviews, but I think this place probably is pretty packed in the summer and suffers the pitfalls of places plagued by a volume of business they are not always prepared to handle. There were only a few people in the place when we ducked in. Our waitress/bartender was super friendly and attentive from the get-go. She made us some fantastic spicy bloody mary’s, and brought us our lunch very promptly. All of us liked our lunch – I had fish tacos and they were just as good as I’ve had them anywhere. I’d definitely go back, but I would guess that in the summer this place can get pretty out-of-hand!
