Stumbled upon this gem, 5 stars for both food and service.
Party of 5. Five of us from Vancouver showed up on a Saturday night and are we glad we did! Friendly staff, exceptional food and great desserts. We were celebrating a special occasion (50th birthday) and the treatment was excellent. Highly recommend.
Mucho Gusto!. Excellent Italian food! Authentic Italian food only uses a few ingrediences which must be used right. This place did just that! Plus there was quite a few sauces to pick from- true sign of a genuine Italian restaurant. We had our menu, the wine list, bread and water about 1 minute after being shown to our seats by a friendly smiling hostess. Our waiter was an older Italian gentleman who told us the specials and was quite nice and just talkative enough. My Linguine Tutto Mare was simply delicious! Good wine, Italian Music, fresh flowers and an attentive staff made it a great experience for us.
The best place to eat in South San Francisco, hands-down.. It has become a running joke that there are no good restaurants in South San Francisco. If you want good food, you have to explore the Taquerias of the Mission District, the Indian Food of the Financial District, the Chinese food of the hilly, narrow streets of Chinatown, or the hipster-fusion places of the Haight (and god help you if you have a car and need to park it somewhere). Or you can go over-the-river-and-through-the-woods to Campbell or Los Gatos, where Silicon Valley has brought five-star eateries to the South Bay (but at a very high price). But South San Francisco? Nah, nothing there…right? WRONG. Ristorante Buon Gusto is leaps-and-bounds better than any place in South SF, if not the city itself, and offers reasonable prices, inviting atmosphere, and the long-lost art of fantastic customer service. It is worth a trip from anywhere in the Bay Area to experience this divine little ristorante.First of all, parking is a breeze. There are plenty of spots on the streets and there are even public lots. And if you take BART or Caltrain, it isnt that far to walk. Looking for a place to eat after landing at SFO? You could do much, much worse. And sometimes nothing makes you feel at home more than a warm smile, some wine and a little Italian food.Perhaps I should start by saying that I never choose Italian. I am allergic to rosemary and I am a former diabetic who avoids carbs. But I know I am in the minority and when we had friends coming to town, I started looking for places to eat outside of the city (a very busy weekend in town because of the Golden Gate 75th) and needed a place where we could visit and nosh comfortably. And wherever we ate needed to have parking. Having been to Candlestick before, I knew finding good eateries in the area was difficult (if not impossible). But then I found a review on Yelp for Ristorante Buon Gusto. What caught my eye was that the ambiance and atmosphere were highlighted and we needed a place that didnt have overpowering music or people screaming at the top of their lungs to drown-out the sirens outside. So I settled on Italian in the name of good company. But truly, I dont think I could have made a better choice. Buon Gusto has made me re-evaluate my stance on Italian food. I was obviously going to all the wrong places. Buon Gusto carries fantastic seafood, veal, chicken, and vegetarian dishes in addition to pasta. And even their table wine is of the highest quality (I live five miles from 60 wineries, and trust me; I drink a lot of the vino and know my stuff). Our table ordered the Cioppino x2, Risotto Porcini, Gnochi al Bolognese, and a bottle of the house Cab Sav. Everything was incredible and we all ended up eating from each others plates and making deals for shrimp and gnochi. We were surprised when given complimentary marsala wine as an aperitif (something that they traditionally do), and their desserts were incredible. We split up a hazelnut and a marscipone torte amongst the group, and two of us had glasses of tawny port, while another party member had an expertly-made espresso (being a former barista, I appreciate when its done right). And if the food werent enough of a reason to eat here, then there is Vincenzo Vecchiola. Co-owner, Vincenzo is one of the most charismatic people I have ever met. He is kind, funny, and he does magic. Yes, magic! Dont worry, he plays to his audience and he wont hoist his charm on the unwilling. But our group was more than happy to have Vincenzo join us from time-to-time with card tricks, slight-of-hand, and stories about magic all while running a successful restaurant. It made our night all the more magical (no pun intended). And the ambiance of Ristorante Buon Gusto invites conversation. There is a hint of levity to the air that brings gales of laughter, smiles, and some of the best customer service I have ever experienced. Buon Gusto features attentive wait staff, quick service, and the ability to make reservations by Open Table or by phone when is the last time you experienced any of those things at an SF Bay restaurant? It was like I was back in Italy, getting the best hospitality available.Lastly, I will say that the pricing was very reasonable. Granted, this is a may we help you type place, so expect entrees to cost around $20. But unlike most places in SF, Ristorante Buon Gusto doesnt serve amuse-gueule-sized entres and some of us even had leftovers to take home for the next days lunch. (And thank you for the very upscale take-out container! They certainly do not skimp on the details here.) The bottle of wine was barely priced for profit (which is very nice to see) and for four of us with wine, port, dinner and dessert, we came in under a buck-and-a-half. (Again, when was the last time this happened to you in the Bay Area?!) Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a great place to eat in South San Francisco, anyone going on a date, anyone looking for real Italian food, and anyone who just wants to feel at home and welcome as soon as they walk in. Who knows? I may not wait until my next visit to the Peninsula and may just make the hour drive to South SF in order to have the veal and to see Vincenzo pull a couple of quarters from his hair….
New owner. Not Italian. Ho…. New owner. Not Italian. Hope he does not screw it up.
Average. Food, service, atmosphere…all average. You won’t hate it, but you won’t love it either.
Excellent, Authentic. Family-owned business, the owner gave us plenty of personal attention, and the server was knowledgeable about each item, and gave us excellent service. They serve good authentic Italian food. Everything was delicious. The interior was much more welcoming than the outside would indicate. Good choice for a date night. My mother also noted that it is handicap accessible.
