Below average food. Dosas are soggy and sambhar is like a thick tasteless paste. And the service…. well… lets just say that a 50 Michelin star place may just get away with that kind of service, but not a place that is still trying to get its Dosas right. It has a unique service model too. It’s not a self service place where you pay and order first. Neither is it a restaurant where you get served, have a meal and then pay and tip. Guess what then? The waiter comes, you order and then pay and tip immediately.Actually makes sense – you are chosing and paying for the level of service you want upfront. Based on that the restaurant decides how miserable the service is.

Visited with three friends on a weekend for dinner. It serves authentic South Indian vegetarian tiffins. Ambience is pretty normal. It gets pretty crowded during lunch and during weekends. Service is pathetic when the crowd increases. You can literally see the frustration building up when a simple dosa doesn’t get served even after 30min. Either it is seriously under staffed or mis-managed. Coming to food, the sight of three colorful chutneys is pretty satisfying for those who love South Indian tiffin and the taste is pretty good as well.

Average tasting lunch thali, choice of curries was not really good. There was Gobi fry, daal, sambar and rasam were good, rice was not really appealing, yogurt and chappati. Place was not clean and tables were dirty with leftovers. Food is relatively cheap though.

I can never understand Indian restaurants like Komala Vilas, which I must be honest, there are many like. The place is way too dirty & the staff unfriendly. A place like this could easily survive in pre-1990s India, but in a competitive economy like the US, it’s truly a miracle. We ordered their thali. The pricing doesn’t seem very friendly, with limited quantities and chappatis considered an extra. And it’s not like the prices are low, to justify the extras or the cleanliness level. Perhaps their food was good, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter, if they can’t really provide a memorable dining experience. Else we’d all be eating at home or ordering takeouts.

It’s a very tough to spot joint, and don’t mistake it for the Singapore komala joints. Serves very decent South Indian food. Priced lower than saravana and sangeetha, the food is just as good. They could do with a quick interior design redo to amp up the look.

  • Food Savvy

Very good Vegetarian South Indian Food. This is a mom & pop shop with very good authentic style vegetarian south indian food. They have lunch buffets every day of the week (including weekends) . They are so very family-home oriented that they give you small portions of sides to avoid wastage. They give you unlimited refills of small portions to avoid throwing away excess food from your plate. they prefer you eat to your heart’s content without wasting food.
