Having tried what felt like nearly every single Deli in the bubble that is Agoura Hills / Westlake Village / Thousand Oaks, I’d finally accepted that Agoura Hills’ Italia Deli and Bakery truly was the best of the best. But hold on just a moment. What’s this? A new competitor? Let the comparisons begin!Star 1 – How was the service and atmosphere? The first thing you’ll notice about Benvenuti is that it’s likely one of the cleanest Delis you’ve ever experienced. With white walls and a spotless white floor, the shiny silver cutting tools behind the counter truly make this place feel a bit like a dentist’s office, and that’s not a bad thing. As for their service, I was greeted by a very nice man (the owner maybe?) who took my order and had my hot sandwich out to me in under 5 minutes. Star Granted.Star 2 – How were the portions relative to the cost?Opting for the Chicago Style Italian Beef with Hot Peppers, my order after tax came in at $8.65 for a large. This was impressive, as I’d spent much more than this at other delis and often dished out a whopping $12 for a large hot sandwich at my beloved Italia. Better yet, the size of my sandwich was nicely in line with what I paid. While there wasn’t nearly as much meat on my sandwich at a Large at Italia, I’d also paid more than $3 less, and in the end was more than satisfied with the portion.Star Granted.Stars 3/4 – How was the food?WOW. What a sandwich. While the bread was a bit on the plain side, the Italian Beef was tender, juicy, and absolutely bursting with flavor. To make things even better, the hot peppers sealed the deal and actually had me wishing I’d opted for a drink. Behind only Italia’s Porchetta, this was the best sandwich I’ve had. Dual Stars Granted.Star 5 – Would you eat it every day if you could? At the end of the day, Benvenuti dishes up an absolutely brilliant sandwich, and while their diverse menu covers everything from Paninis to Salads, I still can’t put them on the 5-Star tier that is Italia. While Benvenuti also tries to be an Italian-inspired grocery store, most of their goods are just pre-packaged import goods, and as a result I can’t picture anyone just walking in to buy some delicious pastas, breads and meats like they do freely at Italia. Additionally, Benvenuti’s menu lacks some of the classics such as Spaghetti and Lasagna, opening up the legitimate chance that if I wasn’t in the mood specifically for a sandwich, I’d be out of luck. The verdict: Come to Benvenuti, you’ll enjoy it, but I can’t say I’d come here every day if I could. No Star Granted.
