Verdict: I’ve been to all of them, and this is the best donut shop in the area.Alas! After carrying out the twice-weekly tradition of hoping on my bike and scouting out one of the many donut shops bordering Thousand Oaks Blvd., I can honestly say I’ve been to just about every single shop in the area, and I’m pleased to say that I really did leave the best for last here.Star 1 – How was the service and atmosphere? While small, Best Donuts is about as clean as it gets in terms of shops, and combined with the brilliant friendliness and hospitality granted by Steve, the Thai owner of Best Donuts, it’s not hard to understand why pictures of celebrities line the walls expressing their gratitude towards the brilliant service at Best Donuts. Have a question or need help choosing? Ask! This is as good as it gets in terms of service and atmosphere. Star Granted.Star 2 – How were the portions relative to the cost?Stumped in terms of what to get, I begged for forgiveness from the Gods of nutrition and opted to go for two, yes two, donuts. Having heard from Yelpers that the standard glazed was tip-top, I opted for one of them along with a delicious looking cinnamon bun. Forgive me waistline!!! Coming in at $0.85 and $1.60 respectively, these were excellent prices especially for the sheer size of these donuts! Have a look at the photos below.Additionally, on another visit that took place less than an hour before closing, Steve was generous enough to give me a $1.65 Cinnamon Bun for only a dollar! As far as value goes, this is as good as it gets! Star Granted. Stars 3/4 – How was the food?As others have stated, Best Donuts doesn’t have quite as diverse of a selection as Stan’s, and what they do have isn’t quite as exotic as Foster’s, but hot damn does Steve make up for it when it comes to taste. To be honest, before visiting Best Donuts, a donut was a donut as far as I was concerned. You had some fried dough, maybe some filling, some glaze, and bingo. However, I don’t know what it is, but the glaze at Best Donuts is absolutely sensational and the craftsmanship of the larger donuts impeccable. After gobbling up my plain glazed in no more than a few bites, I moved on to the cinnamon roll, which was absolutely brilliant. Unlike many of the cinnamon rolls I’ve had in the past (say… at Gladstone Donuts), this wasn’t just a swirl drawn on the top of a standard donut. Instead, this was a full on cinnamon roll that you could pull apart layer by layer, with loads of glaze and goodies between each layer. YUM. At the end of the day, these were without a doubt the best donuts I’ve had anywhere. Dual Stars Granted.Star 5 – Would you eat it every day if you could? While there are loads of donut shops in the area, and each have a bit of a unique aspect that make them appealing depending on what you’re looking for, Best Donuts is without a doubt the only location worthy of 5-Stars, and is enough to turn me into a donut-a-day kind of guy. If you’re looking for a great tasting donut served with a side of fantastic service, Best Donuts really do dish up… the best donuts. Star Granted.
