Having been on a Deli kick these past few weeks, I realized today that Sienna Deli was one of the few Delis that I hadn’t hit within biking distance of Agoura Hills, so I decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, this was not a case of the best being saved for last.Star 1 – How was the service and atmosphere?Nice on the inside with a generous amount of seating, Sienna is a book with an impressive cover. Sandwiches are made to order right behind the counter and service is quick and friendly. Star Granted.Star 2 – How were the portions relative to the cost?Right off the bat, it became evident that Sienna uses almost exclusively Boar’s Head products, and while that’s not a bad thing, I knew that if I went with a classic Boar’s Head sandwich, odds were it would be no different from a Boar’s Head sandwich that I could get at Agoura Liquor or make myself. Keeping that in mind, I ventured over to Sienna’s hot sandwich menu and opted for their BBQ Beef and Cheddar Sandwich. The normal size was $7.09, and while that’s not bad, I was disappointed with the sandwich I received. With no more than 150g or so of roast beef and no other toppings, my sandwich was disappointingly small, and I’d wished that I’d simply gone with a standard Boar’s Head sammy. No Star Granted.Stars 3/4 – How was the food?A meager amount of roast beef covered with bland bbq sauce and poorly melted chunks of cheddar cheese. blech. I really am tempted to withhold both stars here. However, I’m sure if I’d gone with one of the standard cold sandwiches I wouldn’t have been all that disappointed, although I imagine I wouldn’t have been all that impressed either, and therein lies the problem with Delis that rely entirely on Boar’s Head products. Yes, the meats and cheeses are good, but in that you can get Boar’s Head at any old grocery store, what exactly is the point in coming to a deli that charges you more just to construct a sandwich? The great thing about Italia and many of the other delis in the area is that on top of Boar’s Head products they have their own arsenal of tasty unique sandwiches, and that’s what ends up bringing in the customers. With Sienna, one of the few menu items that wasn’t Boar’s Head turned out to be quite poor, so I can’t really say I was at all impressed. Single Star Granted.Star 5 – Would you eat it every day if you could? No, and in fact, I can’t imagine I’ll be back. Listen, if you’re getting your car serviced, or if you work in the Auto Mall, Sienna Deli isn’t a bad place to come in for a very standard sandwich. However, with the number of amazing Delis in the area (Benvenuti is literally less than a mile down the road, and is absolutely brilliant: yelp.com/biz/benvenuti-d) I can’t recommend coming to Sienna. No Star Granted.
