Terrible Experience. Thumbs down is a gift, especially when I had to hold back vomiting my meal that I just ate at The Winery. I will, however, give them credit where credit is due;The Black Stallion Wine at 14.95 a glass was exceptional; The 6 Oysters I ate for $16.95 were very good, except for the bits of shell that made my mouth bleed; The garden salad for $9.95 was excellent; And the asparagus I got with my 2nd steak was very good; Pretty much ends there….I ate at the bar. The bartender highly recommended the game specials and found out the pice de rsistance in game department tonight was venison! I couldn’t have been more excited! I immediately started reminiscing about the ‘cut it with a fork’ venison in reduction sauces that I had in Estes Park, CO and Bangor, ME. Probably set my expectations way too high for this place… The presentation on the plate was exceptional, but I definitely would have been far better off eating a photograph of the food than the actual food. Here’s a rule of thumb.. If you can hear the cutting of your meat over the music and chatter of a loud restaurant, you are in big trouble, which was the case here. As I managed to trim around the massive tendon that I sawed out of the venison, and then started chewing on it like 4 pieces of double bubble, the bartender bounces over and asked ‘well,,,, how is it?’ with a big smile, nodding her head up and down. As I started explaining that this really wasn’t a good cut of meat, she quickly corrected me to say that game meals were not for everyone and that it is probably great but I just didn’t know what to expect and that … Blah, Blah, Blah,… Pretty much to say that I am a bumbling idiot for questioning the quality of food before me, though I have eaten the finest food, including game of all varieties, in the finest restaurants in this land.Probably should mention the ‘reduction’ sauce that accompanied my deer flavored double bubble, before I go much further:1 part ketchup1 part Worcestershire sauceSome Garlic powderA lot of salt….Boil till thick and BINGO… Venison reduction sauce. Yyyuuucckkk…. Pretty sure this is the source of the near violent ending to my culinary adventure of the evening. So the bartender says she will take the venison back and would I like a steak instead, which is the proper thing to do when someone’s meal is not good. (I probably should mention that this is the first time in many many YEARS that I have sent back my food, so this is not a habit). I told her I would take the NY Strip, their top of the line, $48 steak. Figured I couldn’t go wrong with that one and that my meat craving would finally be fulfilled…. (You’re probably getting ahead of me here…)So another magnificently presented cut of meat is laid before me. WOW! They have got that part down. The first 4 or 5 bites were actually really good, and then the near autopsy level sawing began. Once again I could actually HEAR the knife attempt to sever the many tendons over the music and chatter of a bar that had now doubled in attendance. Never mind, I told myself, just eat it and get out of there. I was starving to begin with and needed to just eat and end this miserable experience.2/3 way through the beef flavored double bubble, a guy, seemingly of authority, came by to inquire about my meal. In a calm voice I explained the problem with this steak. He quickly explained that all their steaks were the best organic, farm raised beef in all of California, and that this and that and that and this… he was talking so fast I couldn’t begin to tell you what he said. The humor of this part of the evening is that as he was talking, I was still wrestling with the steak trying to cut it; vegetables and gristle were falling all over the bar as I attempted find a few more edible bites. The guy obviously missed that show and tell. ANYWAY, he then starts asking what can he do to make it right, over and over and over again. I explained that I was already full from this very average steak I just ate and couldn’t eat any more. I also told him that I have eaten many average steaks in my life, but am certain that I have never paid so much for them as I was tonight. He apologized and walked off.I got my bill, gave the bartender my credit card, and she went and talked to the guy that had babbled all of the reasons my steak shouldn’t have been awful, and they VERY RIGHTLY REMOVED THE $48 CHARGE FOR THE STEAK FROM MY BILL. Trust me, I would have much rather had a great venison meal that I could cut with a fork than a freebie, but it was some level of restitution. It really concerns me when you go to a so called ‘high end restaurant, that brags about all of their awards, and get a meal like that. Concerns me even more when the assumption by the staff is that I am a complete moron for finding fault with their perfect food. Probably should have read more of the reviews as this is not only bad review posted. They did the right thing by taking the steak charge off the bill… Still would have preferred a great meal and experience.SO, if you have a hankering for beef at a high end place where you can valet your car, go to The Winery, valet the car, and then HIGH TAIL IT TO RED ROBIN WHICH SHARES THE SAME PARKING LOT… You will be much happier…

One of the best restaurants in Orange County!. I’ve eaten at The Winery many times since it opened and have always been impressed with the service, the food, and the atmosphere. It is one of my favorite places to dine in Orange County and I highly recommend it.
Great dirty martini!!!
Great Food, but customer service poor. March 12, 2011The man who seats the customers at this restaurant needs retraining or else needs to be fired. I haven’t been subjected to this kind of treatment in a restaurant before. I reserved a table for 2 for a birthday celebration. When we arrived at 5:30 pm (early) there were plenty of open tables. When we were shown to a small table for two in a corner, I requested a table nearby where we might be able to sit side by side. Instead we were taken to the bar area (where it is noisier) and when I commented on this table, I was then offered a table outside on the (cold) patio area. I declined and remained. The food was good and the service was good, but the attendant who seats the customers needs to be retrained or fired because he thinks he is more important than the customers who pay his wages.I was insulted by his actions and his demeanor.Additionally, I reserved my table as a birthday celebration for my wife 2 days in advance. This was totally ignored by the attendant until I mentioned it upon our departure. Then he offerred a free drink. (My wife does not drink.)When we left, most of the empty tables that were available when we arrived, were still empty when we left. What a waste. I most likely will not return to this restaurant despite the good food. Ruth Chris restaurant gives better service and is more courteuos to their customers while offering high quality food.
Overpriced for the food and drink. Servers were snobby. Nice decor. For how much it costs, I expected much more than the mediocre food we were served.
