READ UPDATE AT END OF THIS REVIEW. RATING HAS DROPPED.Best Sushi in Continental U.S. You’ve no doubt heard raves about Nobu. But even the best raves for Nobu can’t compare to those I’m about to lob at Hama. I’ve eaten at some of the supposed best sushi restaurants from coast to coast… yet not one compares to Hama. The freshness and flavor of Hama’s fish is what sushi is supposed to taste like. Everything from the standard tuna rolls to the tempura to the chef’s specials are spectacular. The prices are a bit high, but worth it. You get what you pay for. Make sure they seat you in the main dining area. The outside room with the bar tends to get a bit crowded and loud. I’ve only been to one sushi spot better than Hama and that’s on Oahu… which is why Hama – at least for me – qualifies as the best in the continental U.S.UPDATE August 2016:On a recent visit, the quality of fish lacked its former bravado. The artistry of the chefs has slipped as well. For example, when asked to use his imagination and create a roll, one chef took the easy route and used pre-prepared MSG infused sauce. Skimpy Spider rolls arrived from the kitchen, not the sushi bar. I’m dropping my rating to 3.5 from a previously rated 4.5. No longer can this establishment be thought of as having the best raw fish in the continental United States.
Best Sushi I’ve had in California. I honestly have NO idea how the review below mine is unhappy with Restaurant Hama! I thought the atmosphere was ideal: laid back, friendly, authentic. The sushi was fresh (and refreshing!) and the staff is nice and helpful with suggestions of what to order, considering I always like to try new dishes when eating sushi. I’ll definitely be going back and bringing all of my friends here! I’ve already recommended this restaurant to a bunch of people and will be talking about Restaurant Hama whenever anyone asks me where the ‘best sushi in town’ is 🙂
An absolutely wonderful resturaunt, all of the staff are japanese, which makes this a wonderful place to come; both for the wonderful sushi and to practice your 😉
My favorite restaurant in Venice.
Overpriced and Bad Food. This place used to be a great little find back in the mid-90s, when they still had an outdoor terrace and wonderful lunch specials. However, since it has transformed into an uber-hip bar, the food has taken a nosedive until it tastes worse than the stuff you get prepackaged at a supermarket. We had oysters on the half shell, eel and avocado roll, scallop roll, albacore sushi, and salmon sushi — and every single piece was mealy, mushy, the wrong temperature, and undersized. The bill was a nasty surprise as well, over $50 for supermarket-grade sushi. Skip this place.
