Puffs nom nom.. They can be a bit inconsistent with their puffs being stale or a bit warm. I had a good one on my last visit. Crispy pastry skin with generous amount of cool custard in the center. It’s only delicious and correctly made when the custard is cool! I love the creaminess and the visible specks of vanilla bean from the custard. MMmmm…
Cream Filled Temptation. Beard Papa’s is a very narrowly focused endeavor. They are there to provide you will cream filled treats in order to satisfy your sweet tooth. This is the sweet tooth that’s been gnawing away at you for the past few hours while you tried to be healthy and eat a responsible amount of raw fish at one of the many, many sushi houses on Sawtelle.You were doing so well, but now you’re walking past Beard Papa’s and you can smell that cloying scent of baking confections. Just one, you tell yourself, they’re only small. Before you know it you’ve bought a dozen, half of which won’t survive the walk back to the car, because they won’t accept credit cards on orders under $10 and you’ve even thrown in an eclair.They trapped you, and you loved every sweet second of it.

Cream Puffs. Beard Papa offers cream puffs. And coffee and a few other items, but it’s really all about cream puffs. You can get them with chocolate on top and call them eclairs, or get their cookie version, but it’s still a cream puff. I guess the chocolate lava cake isn’t technically a cream puff, but it’s awfully similar to a cream puff. Fillings are a choice of chocolate, vanilla, or a special flavor like coffee or caramel. And they’re all really good. The really good thing about this location of Beard Papa is that it’s the perfect place for dessert for a whole bunch of restaurants that are within two blocks (Blue Marlin, Hide Sushi, Sushi Mac, Asahi Ramen, and many others). vortex, and sometimes the really good food trucks (e.g., Takoyaki Tanota and the Lobsta Truck) are there. It turns out that cream puffs are an excellent dessert to complement Japanese food. Come to think of it, I’m having a hard time thinking of a food that Beard Papa’s cream puffs wouldn’t complement.
