Village Pub. Do not let the name fool you. Locals might prefer that the word not get out. As fine a dining experereince as you’ll find in a charmy, non-, but elegant dining room.
Wine List Review. I have eaten at this place several times and it has always been a wonderful experience. Now let’s look at the wine list. If money is not an issue, then this is a great place to wine and dine because the list is packed with some real gems from France and Italy. Although we have focused this review on wines on the list that are priced under $100, there are some exceptional values at higher price points. We have included several wines from Bordeaux that sell for over $100 at the end of the review. As with all of our reviews, you will see the price at the restaurant followed by the mark-up over retail (2010 Lieff, Napa Valley, Sauvignon Blanc | $54 | 2.1x | This translates into a retail price of $26).VINOSERVANT’S TOP WINE VALUES UNDER $100 A BOTTLE AT THE VILLAGE PUBSauvignon Blanc 2010 Mount Nelson, Marlborough, Sauvignon Blanc | $32 | 1.6x | TOP PICK 2010 Foppiano, Russian River Valley, Sauvignon Blanc | $34 | 1.9x | TOP PICK 2010 Daniel Chotard, Sancerre, Loire Valley, Sauvignon Blanc | $48 | 2.2x 2010 Lieff Napa Valley, Sauvignon Blanc | $54 | 2.1x | TOP PICKChardonnay 2008 Trevor Jones, Virgin, South Australia, Chardonnay | $34 | 1.5x 2008 Ojai, Bien Nacido Vineyard, Santa Maria, Valley, Chardonnay | $58 | 2.2x 2007 Freestone, Sonoma County, Chardonnay | $90 | 1.6x | TOP PICKOther Whites 2009 Argiolas Costamolino Vermentino | $34 | 2.1x 2009 Elk Cove Vineyards, Williamette Valley, Pinot Blanc | $38 | 2.2xPinot Noir 2009 Mount Eden Vineyards, Domaine Eden, Santa Cruz Mounains, Pinot Noir | $60 | 2.0x 2009 Ojai Vineyards, Santa Barbara, Pinot Noir | $64 | 2.1x 2004 Domaine Michel Gros, Vosne-Romanee | $68 | 1.7x | TOP PICK 2009 Willakenzie Estate, Thibaud’s Cuvee, Willamette Valley, Pinot Noir | $70 | 1.8x | TOP PICK 2008 Ojai, Presidio Vineyard, Santa Barbara County, Pinot Noir | $88 | 2.2x | TOP PICK 2007 Domaine Ramonet, Clos Saint Jean, Chassagne-Montrachet | $94 | 2.4x 2007 Domaine Roulot, Monthelie | $96 | 2.1x 2008 Le Cadeau, Cote Est, Willamette Valley, Pinot Noir | $98 | 2.0x 2008 Tendril, Willamette Valley, Pinot Noir | $100 | 2.0xZinfandel, Syrah & Sangiovese 2008 Dashe, Dry Creek Valley, Zinfandel | $46 | 2.3x 2008 The Ojai Vineyard, Santa Barbara County, Syrah | $48 | 2.0x 2007 Silvio Nardi, Rosso di Montalcino | $54 | 1.9x | TOP PICK 2009 Neyers, Old Lakeville Road, Sonoma County, Syrah | $65 | 2.4x 2008 Domaine les Pallieres, Les Terrasses de Diable, Gigondas | $78 | 2.5x 2007 Jemrose, Cardiac Hill, Sonoma Country, Syrah | $88 | 2.1x | TOP PICKCabernet Sauvignon 2007 Mario Perelli-Minetti Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon | $48 | 2.1x 2005 Chateau Loudenne, Medoc | $58 | 2.3x | TOP PICK 2008 Fistcuffs, Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon | $58 | 2.1x 2003 Corison, Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon | $62 | 1.2x | TOP PICK 2004 Chateau Pibran, Pauillac | $76 | 2.2xBottles of Bordeaux over $100 2005 Chateau Margaux | $1,850 | 1.5x 1997 Chateau Mouton Rothschild | $500 | 1.1x | TOP PICK 1983 Chateau Lafite Rothschild | $1,150 | 1.0x | TOP PICK
Worst restaurant in recent memory – Avoid. It is evident this USED to be a great restaurant, but I was truly appalled at my experience. From the arrogant clientele (whom the hostess – who was amazing – assured us she was used to dealing with) to the indifferent service to the truly disgusting food, nothing other than the nice tables works. That said, if you like butter, LOTS of butter, this is your place. Butter is the main ingredient in every dish regardless of its intent. Everything else is just dressing. My dining companion couldn’t even eat his pumpkin soup because all it was was butter with pumpkin coloring – I thought he was joking until I tried some. My chicken salad was a huge slab of boiled chicken that looked like it came from Safeway. My companion’s French omlette was, again, butter butter butter with possibly some eggs thrown in. French cooking, if that is was we were indeed eating, is not simply butter and flavoring.Service was shocking for a restaurant with upscale pretensions. The waitress and the busboys never talked to one another, so a request made to one never was fulfilled by either. Don’t order a lot of food since they refused to take away any plates until the very very end. At least our server knew a little about the menu. The Village Pub is typical Silicon Valley – all show and no substance. It is packed by customers with little knowledge of good food or service, yet who pretend to know both. With tip, our lunch came to $70 for two, an unacceptable amount for food that could be bought at any grocery store and then slathered with butter.Avoid this restaurant at all costs until they get their act together in every aspect (except the amazing hostess)
