I am from Puerto Rico and my wife from Colombia. First time we both went we seriously had every item from the menu. Delicious.. Went into flashback mode thinking about the good time. Second time we tried to go after Sunday Church it was closed. I’ve promoted the place like if I owned it. Now I would NOT go again. Apparently the owner decided to change the menu to Mexican food. Nothing against that food it’s just because If I go to a Puerto Rican restaurant I expect Puerto Rican food. Truly sorry and disappointing.
From El Coqui. After being away since June, when I last visited this restaurant, I decided to check out its progress. Thus, I and two companionsone Cuban and the other Boricua, visiting from Floridamade our trek from Denver to Colorado Spring, where I anticipated authentic Boricua culinary delight. Yes, the friendly atmosphere I described to my companions was still there, and the authentic Boricua flavor was also thereBUT, to my dismay, I still did not see much of a selection. El bistec encebollado had plenty of onions, but not enough juice to spread around the rice with beans, what we borinquenos expect to do with this dish. My friend ordered the empanadillas, which he divided one so we may also enjoy, which we absolutely did. Then, with great enthusiasm, we opened our pastels. Yes, pastelsnot even in Denver. But our excitement quickly ended when we found that the pastels were made of yucca. I quickly looked at the small whiteboard at the front, where the days specials are announced, but there was no mention that the pastels were made of yucca. I really dont mind yucca; in fact, I find it quite tasty. But when a Boricua (whether in Puerto Rico, New York, Jersey, Chicago, or Orlando) orders pastels, he or she expects pastels de guinea (bananas) UNLESS the menu indicates the pastels are of yucca. (Usually, customers are given a choice.) But the fact is that pastels to the native bring images of green bananas masa. Pasteles of yucca are fine, but it must be a specified; otherwise, the customer will view this as deceptive. We also found this to be true when we ordered alcapurriaYucca again! Is this Boricua???? PLEASE tell me in advance!!! Ill decide if this is what I want. From that point on, the rest was rather routine and not much to write about.Since my last review, the prices have gone up. Unfortunately, the prices are comparable to Carinos, Applebee, or Olive Gardenrestaurant that, although not great, offer a broader menu and true choices. Mi Viejo San Juan has the potential to be a 5 star restaurant, but they really need to be more upfront with the customers. Hopefully, in my next trip to Colorado Springs, Ill be presently surprise. Yes, Ive got faith in this wonderful family who are still going through the learning curve.
