Adequate but overpriced. The food descriptions sounded a lot better than the reality. I live in this neighborhood and really wanted it to be special. The waiter ordered 2 entrees incorrectly so two had to wait and then the pork was overcooked. One of our party ordered 2 appetizers and asked that they be served at different times but they were both brought out together. The dessert was simply presented- nothing special. The evening just did not live up to expectations.
Confession. I live right across the street from this place, and based on their website menu, did not try this place out…until last week. Shame on me. The service was excellent, as was the food. Portion sizes were perfect, so did not leave feeling over-stuffed. Some of the foods did challenge my palate, but in a good way. Definitely worth a try – make reservations though, especially on weekend nights.
OUTSTANDING. Every once and a while there is a new restaurant in Denver that is head and shoulders above the rest. The last time I gave accolades was to Fruition. Charcoal Restaurant is stunning. It is not a hushed environment like Fruition. It is sexy, bold and since it always seems to be fully booked, a place for celebration or a hot date. Antique chadeliers, elegant draped fabrics, private dining room makes this place on par with restaurants in NY and LA.What impresses me is even as big as the restaurant is, the place always seems to be in control. The waiters glide by and are friendly. I saw what I think is the management carefully watching the service. You can watch the kitchen with the head chef yelling orders to the staff. It is really a great idea to sit at the grill counter and watch your food being made. If you are a cook, it is a humbling experience to watch true professional at work. And the food. Outrageously good. This is not a place that is focused on creating cutesy dishes. Charcoal Restaurant is a place that if you are a gourmet that appreciates technically prepared cuisine, you will be in heaven.Must haves- House cured gravlax brushed with Aquavet. Hardwood grilled strip steak. Braised ox tail. Scallops and the wonderful deserts. The wine list is well priced and balanced. Its nice to see Denver rising above be known only as a franchise and steak town.
Visited New Year’s Eve, with a group of friends. Expected it to be pricier due to the evening, but ordered the $44 surf and turf. The steak was marginal, and the Lobster tail, was by far the smallest I’ve ever had, I seriously thought it was a crawfish tail. Between all the apps and food, I found nothing exceptional, and I tried a lot that night. Service was good with a good atmosphere.
Worth a trip. I was looking for a new spot and happened on Charcoal. What a pleasant surprise! It was convienient to both downtown and Capital Hill. Street parking was not an issue at lunch, though it could be.The food was fabulous! Grill scallops, flat iron steak, salmon, were all prepared perfectly. The sweet potato/butternut squash soup with a drizzle of truffle oil, was to die for. Overall, an excellant experiende. Thank you.
