—-Dec 01, 2016 update: True to my word, it took less 2 years, actually 50 days, for me to make a return visit. There was no bananas Foster French toast on special so my wife ordered the French toast with berries that proved to be very good, but not OMG great. I checked out the specials board and the display case gravitating to the Spanish tortilla that was made with kale, bacon and potatoes. The tortilla and accompanying romesco sauce was by far the best I have ever experienced. It came with 2 slices of toast and home made jam, a virtual steal at $5. Will we be returning in less than 50 days? You can bank on it even I have to crawl. —-Oct 12, 2016 I have had this restaurant on my To do list for at least 2 years, but never seemed to get around to visiting it until recently. My wife and I arrived at around 10:30AM when there were only a few other diners. Chef Sabrina welcomed us and explained the menu and the specials posted on a blackboard. We each opted for a special, my wife choosing the bananas Foster French toast made with croissants while her distinguished guest opted for the bacon and onion quiche. Though the quiche was very good, it did not bring a smile to my face or cause me to exclaim OMG like the French toast did for my wife. I can assure everyone that it will not be another 2 years before our next visit.
Unique food everytime I go, though I do always tend to get the Ranchero breakfast every time because I love the plantains. I’ve learned to like the self-service, but a little strange at first. Great place to grab some homemade desserts as well.
Poor customer service. Today I had a meeting there at 8:00 in the morning. It was pouring rain and I had to park up the street because there is no designated parking at the restaurant. I arrived ten minutes before they opened. I knocked at the door and they watched me through the window stand in the rain for 10 minutes in the cold! They would not let me wait inside. I have gone there numerous times for meetings but will find a more customer friendly location in the futures. The chef is talented but has a bit of an attitude. In the past I just thought she had the personality of an artist. Today – the lack of her invitation to wait inside will mean she lost a regular customer!Too bad – her food was undeniable good.
A gem not to be missed. Cafe 56 has been open a little more than one year and it has become an absolute favorite of much of Middletown. Much of the Superior Court staff, including the judges, can be found there any day at lunch. A group of judges like the food so much that they meet there monthly even after being assigned to other courthouses.Sabrina Cortes, the owner and chef, is a master of flavor. Classically trained, her food reflects that plus her Latin American heritage. Her food has a kick–a flavor kick–but it is never too much; always just right. Her daily specials are imaginative and exciting. I have learned to eat many new foods and combinations that I might never have tried before I learned to simply trust her skill. Her soups are especially wonderful. It is a tiny place and it is only open for breakfast and lunch, but she does special dinners once a month and her cafe is available for private parties as well.
