A mixed review. I went to the Nutshell with some friends in the past month and we all saw some good and some bad things in the experience.Good Things:- The spices and flavors in our food was great. I got a seafood dish with a little heat in it and it was very tasty. Others had seafood pasta or paella or steak dishes that they all agreed had interesting and tasty seasoning.- Small, intimate environment.- The bar was in a separate room, which segregated some of the conversation/noise from the dining area.- The wine menu features some Portuguese wines, which is a nice thing we don’t see everywhere, and makes sense considering it’s a Portuguese restaurant.Bad Things:- The service was BEYOND SLOW. We had to wait an excessive amount of time for appetizers, then another excessive amount of time for entrees. Not just a little slow–REALLY slow. Don’t go here if you’re trying to catch a movie later on or something. I get the feeling this is normal for them too because the restaurant was not busy and the waitresses while polite were not apologetic–seems like the status quo?- At one point the waitresses were re-setting tables around us (with no one else eating in the room), yet they were completely ignoring dirty plates on our table for over half an hour. At one point I stacked a bunch of the plates at the edge of the table and eventually they did pick them up, but they still walked past them several times before taking the cue. I mean, come on, this is Waitressing 101. – Another waitressing/pacing thing we thought was odd–we ordered a couple appetizers and then a couple of us ordered salads, but the salads came out before the appetizers leaving over half the table hungry and a little confused.- While the food was flavorful, everyone at the table commented that their protein was at least a little overcooked (if not moderately overcooked). We didn’t complain because it took forever to get the food in the first place and we were all starving by that point.Neutral-ish Things:- The price point for most entrees is $20-$30 a plate. It seems reasonable considering that there’s a lot of seafood offerings and the portions are generous (but proteins should be cooked more precisely considering the price points, in our opinion).- If you order a caesar salad, they don’t mix the dressing in, rather they serve it on the side. I can see some people hating this, but I thought it wasn’t a bad thing for the health-conscious person. We were a little surprised that this is automatically how they do it, but I guess it’s fine.- Most entrees come with potatoes and rice, which perhaps is just a Portuguese thing but was a little unexpected for some of us who didn’t anticipate two starches. It’s something to note if you plan to go.- The environment was cozy but almost too dark. We realized part way through that there was a ceiling light bulb or two that was out. It might sound like a minor detail but it’s a small restaurant, so every bit of light kind of counts and it seemed strange that no one on staff noticed this.
