Nice restaurant that is away from the downtown scene. The food is good, especially the BBQ. Often times they offer a specials menu with some interesting dishes (soft shell crabs). Large bar area and the place can be a little loud when it is packed. Otherwise, generally good service and tasty food.
Authentic pit smoked meats now have one of the best burger I have had in a while around here. Calamari was great and so was the ambiance/staff at the new boatyard @ smokey joes…great improvement on what was only a take out place for me.
Hire some staff, already!. Wanted to sample the seafood at the recently opened Boatyard on the upper level of Smokey Joe’s but after waiting for ten minutes for a human to take notice of us and the other hungry would-be diners, we finally got the attention of a harried man who seemed to be up and down the stairs, behind the bar and at the host station. No more tables available upstairs but plenty of room downstairs, he suggested. Downstairs looks like someone’s rec room from the 70’s with the harsh lighting, pool table taking up most of the room (fortunately with a screening wall between the games and the dining booths. One waitress had the whole room to herself, plus tables upstairs. The food took a while to arrive but given the crowd and shorthandedness, it could have been way worse. Even though it’s a BBQ joint we mainly stayed with seafood and it wasn’t too bad: tuna cakes were tasty if a little heavy on the breadcrumbs, and pretty spicy; orrechiette with scallops and shrimp in a light garlic and butter sauce was devoured by my companions; New England clam chowder similarly was inhaled by a hungry teen. The jalapeno cheddar burger was good sized and very spicy, so be warned. An appetizer of pulled pork sliders was kind of bland considering the nature of the restaurant (I’m a fan of Virginia pulled pork and this was a pallid comparison). Likewise, a basket of fresh-cut french fries with sea salt and rosemary was okay, but nothing special. Though it did keep us from chewing on the table while we waited for our entrees.
Great Place!!. Love the BBQ and the expansion of seafood, steaks and burgers to the menu. Not your old smokey joes but more refined and cleaner. My wife loves the ahi tuna burger salad and i go for the ribs. Decent prices, kid friendly menu/game room…perfect place to entertain or just go out to grab a bite.
Good food bit $10 for a Margarita???
Good grub. Good BBQ, not the best i ever had but still a great BBQ joint. Their chopped BBQ sandwich is great and I love how they serve the meat without sauce and you can had your own.
Great BBQ…. Coming from a bbq town in kansas city, these guys make a mean pulled pork sandwich with awesome spicy hickory sauce. Ribs were super good and the sides of collard greens and ranch style beans with a real southern cornbread complimented it just fine. these guys know what they’re doing, great food and real friendly service…thanks for the great meal..a must try!!
