Very good food but even better service. We enjoyed the food – the atmosphere was a bit loud, but the service was amazing. All you had to do was think you wanted something and the waitress was there. The food was expensive and the menu limited but all we tasted very good. We would visit again.

Top Notch Restaurant. My wife and I came across Max’s Oyster bar 14 years ago as we were wandering through West Hartford. We stopped in for a drink and a bite to eat and stayed for dinner. Since then we have been there many, many times, sometimes for an occasion, sometimes for a family function and sometimes just for the heck of it. It is always a great time. They have top notch service, excellent food and a high energy dynamic. It’s a great restaurant for a date or to take clients or even a casual meal. The raw bar is top notch. Crisp, delicious shellfish piled high, but every item on the menu is made with care and is extremely fresh and flavorful.I noticed that one reviewer mentioned about the fried clams, and I agree. They do fried food extremely well – clams, oysters, calamari… But then again they do everything well it seems. My personal favorited are the ‘Max’s Skyscraper’ which is a three tiered mountain of shellfish both raw and cooked, they make a great seared tuna and anything they do with sea bass is ridiculously good. I would never personally order a steak there, but a guest of ours once did and it was excellent as well.Max’s is a personal favorite and is highly recommended. On Friday night right after work, I’d suggest you avoid the bar, though. It gets mobbed with large groups of young professionals letting off some steam. Get a table. You will be much happier!

We went for happy hour and the first few times the good was great, but they recently changed the menu and the mussels just wasn’t as good as before an they took the mac and cheese which was delicious off the menu. The expresso martini thou is the best I’ve had.

I really like this place but damn it can cost you. Oysters are great though and if you can afford it go for it.

Loved It!. Oysters and lobster special were both great! Ian was our server and made a great dining experience even better. The timing of courses and drink orders flowed in perfect harmony. Extremely knowledgeable and polite staff. A++

Prices have gone up 25% to 30% over a 3 year period and the food is the same. A nice place to eat but really pretty overpriced at this point. Stopped in for an ale late one afternoon.. $8.75 for a draft beer….huh?
