We went in just to try the local Mexican restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised by the food overall. I ordered a chimichanga and my girlfriend ordered fajitas. The portions were big and the food nicely seasoned. The only downside was the salsa (more like a tomato puree resembling ketchup) and the side portions of rice that appeared overcooked just a mushy mess. The beans, though I’m sure they were canned, we’re really well seasoned and everything else was appetizing. Stear clear of the corn syrup tea.
Good food, Great atmosphere!. My husband and I were delighted when we entered the restaurant. The staff was warm. The food was great (big portions). Absolutely loved the Mariachi entertainment. The decor was amazing. Reasonable prices. We will definitely return when in town.
Okay quality, mostly bland food, decent salsa. The chips are the same type of chips as Doritos – definitely not any special chips, not cantina style, not thin, just thick ol’ cheap chips. The salsa is good, the guacamole is bland, as is most of the standard Tex-Mex menu items (pulled chicken less desirable and unseasoned than most run-of-the-mill Mexican restaurants). Tamale is heavy on the cornmeal, barely any pork inside. Rice dry and tasteless, beans extremely pasty and dry. Their saving grace? Make your own combination. Choose 3-5 different items and build your own. Decent prices, decent service. You’ll leave full, but you may not leave happy.
Mexico Malo. The high point of our visit was the food which was ok – not good enough to return for. Salsa is bland; chile relleno was decent although the enchilada-ish sauce that came with it was too salty. Pork tamale had too much dough. Guacamole salad was good with green leaf lettuce and tomato. Huge portions – a plus if you value quantity over quality. Husband’s beef fajitas were ok but didn’t inspire him to take home the leftovers. Service was really bad from begining to end – massive confusion upon entry, irritated customers getting seated out of order, and then a long wait for a server…and then beer….and then the order…Decor is frightful: manufactured kitsch that borders on (culturally) offensive. Table behind us had a beef with the manager over the lack of response to their poor experience.
Great local Mexican!!. Awesome local Mexican Restaurant! Large portions, low prices. Whole family loves it!!
It’s just ok, nothing to rave about. We went here on a Friday at dinner time and I realize it was busy but our server just didn’t care about our table. We had 5 adults and all ordered appetizers, entrees, and alcohol but our server barely stopped by and we had to ask for water and any refills. I saw him peek around the corner of the kitchen, scan the restaurant, and then go back in the kitchen while I was trying to get his attention! The food wasn’t out of this world, it was just OK mexican/tex-mex style food. We ordered chile rellenos, enchiladas, and quesadillas. They were hot and average, I would say you could probably get frozen tv dinners that taste about the same. After thinking on my visit for a full day, I came to the conclusion I wouldn’t return here because I don’t want to tell my server how to do his job. I was unimpressed with this place as well as Las Margaritas which has similar serving issues. Will continue to look for a decent Mexican place in Gainesville.
Tasty Mexican Dishes. As soon as you walk in you know where you are. Maybe the design of this restaurant is a little over the top, but the food makes us for it. I’ve been about three times and never has my meal been bland. They seem to infuse their food with flavor that just thinking about it now makes me salivate. It’s a casual place so no need to dress up. The outdoor eating area is a good alternative to the claustrophobic indoors. Word of warning: they give you lots of food, don’t be fooled by the low prices. I recommend this place to the thrifty foodie looking for that Mexican fix, just ignore the crazy colors on the walls.
