Koy Wan — formerly Crazy Buffet — has gone through many ownership changes to get where it is today, and through them all, the food has always been good, the staff courteous, and the overall experience pleasant. Today, unfortunately, marks the end of that winning streak, and any and all positive experiences I’ve had over the years have been ruined by one manager’s concerns over pennies along with his desire to embarrass my mother and me in front of a room full of lunch patrons.Let me preface the review with the following. I’m a big guy and diabetic. I’ve been eating right, controlling my portions and losing weight slowly and methodically while swimming at the gym. On rare occasions, due to diet and of course budget, we will go out to eat, usually lunch is what we can afford, and one of my all time favorites was Koy Wan for their sushi offerings.Granted, much has changed — salmon has been removed from the lunch menu, as has eel, and many other of my favorites — including the size of the fish slices on the Nigiri getting smaller as well as more rice on the the rolls with less filling. Being diabetic, I have to watch the simple carbs, and white rice must be severely limited. Awhile back, Koy Wan had started posting notices in fine print on their tables — barely readable and rather tacky — insisting customers not waste food. I had asked management about this years ago, pointing out that I was diabetic and had to control my starch intake, and they replied that it was intended for people who loaded up their plates and threw most of it away, not for something as simple as rice.Well, apparently today, that has changed. I typically have two plates of food — while my mother usually only has 1/2 a plate — the first loaded up with sushi, and the second a few more of my favorites. Granted, there is a fair amount of rice that I peel off the rolls and that I don’t eat with the slices of Nigiri, but it has never been a problem before, however, as I sat down with my second and final plate, noting that my prior plate of rice had not yet been cleared by the wait staff, the manager literally came running to our table, standing several feet away and began speaking AT me, neither quietly nor politely to us.You can’t don that. It’s against restaurant policy. YOU ARE WASTING FOOD! … I was in shock, especially since I had addressed this question with management long ago, but I said, it’s just rice — no meat, vegetables, etc. I’m diabetic and I can’t eat all the rice.If you want sashimi, we’ll make it for you, but it will cost extra. I’m happy with the buffet as-is, and have never had a problem. He said, we will charge you $0.30 a piece for sushil. Well, I’m paying $9 for lunch, as is my mother for her 1/2 plate, that would be about 30 pieces of sushi which would be fine, I guess.NO, that’s on TOP of the buffet price! So, let me get this straight, I don’t go to the hibachi grill, I rarely have anything else off the rest of the buffet, perhaps a crab rangoon or some veggies, but if I want what I came here for ON the buffet, I would have to pay extra because I can’t eat all the rice because I’m diabetic?!*SIGH* This was supposed to be a happy meal out for my mother and me … I’m going in for my first surgery EVER next week, and I wanted us to have a nice meal at my favorite restaurant for a good memory — just in case … well … heck, I’m scared.Instead, we were accosted by management, and when we asked our server if he was the manager or the owner, he swiftly came in and once again barked at us if we had any other questions, and this time he would not charge us — well ME — the extra money. Heck, I wonder if he was going to grab my plates and start counting the balls of rice. After I mentioned being diabetic again and asking if he had any health issues where he had to control his diet, to which he responded, no. He then insisted that health is most important, but its also important not to waste food, and money WASN’T at issue! Though he said that last part twice, I somehow think it was indeed at issue, just watching the changes over the years. I offered to buy and bring in a bag or rice to replace the rice I couldn’t eat, but that didn’t go over too well.Suffice it to say, for pennies worth of rice, the manager at Koy Wan has lost us and all of our friends and those whom I used to recommend the restaurant to as potential patrons. Such a shame really, as the amount of good will referrals I’ve made over the years really added up. I’m really curious to know what the owners think of this policy, and moreover how were were treated and embarrassed in front of a room full of other diners. So I can no longer give Koy Wan the 4-5 star rating it used to receive from me. Due to the actions of one particular manager, I can no longer enjoy what was once something to look forward to. Hope my surgery goes well so I can find a new sushi buffet somewhere else.

We used to like this restaurant a while back but things have gone completely down hill in service and food. After dining there dozens of times, we recently vowed never to return. There’s a dwindling variety of dishes and the new manager, Paul, is rude with no customer service skills. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE.

I thought the food was ok-good. My wife got sick on the first plate and never eat another bite. The hibachi chefs take a break between 4-430 so we paid for a service we never got basically.
