The Greek Island Grille is a little Mediterranean oasis in the zoo-like atmosphere of the Flamingo Flea Market. It’s definitely a great foodie reprieve from all the bargain shopping. It’s located on the very far northeast end of the flea market where most of the other food vendors reside. Even while it’s tucked away in a small corner, it still has a feel of a mom and pop/family-style atmosphere. Just know that it’s a cash-only establishment, but it’ll be worth it once you see the magic come out onto a plate.Being from a multicultural city, I’m quite picky about my Greek food, but this family lives up to making their food with a lot of love. Starting from their salad, they have all the lovely accoutrements that make the salad special. They put a lovely mild square slice of feta, and all the vegetables are cold and fresh. Even as a side option, it’s a very substantial portion. My husband opts for the gyro because it’s a manly portion with the right amount of tzatziki. The gyro meat is also very flavorful. As for me, I thoroughly enjoy their Spanokopita. This is a dish that many people have messed up royally in the past, but the multiple layers of flaky phyllo dough combined with the spinach mixture brings it all in a beautiful distribution of happiness in muh belly. I’d typically order a salad with this, but the portion size can definitely feed the hangry. I’ve checked out the restaurant’s FB page and they’re always posting pictures of fresh batches of what they’ve got. I highly suggest trying their lamb dolmas and their famous baba ganoush. Again, they do simple right. I have yet to sample their desserts, particularly their baklava, but I’m always torn between that and Rita’s bundt cake creations. In short, great food, great atmosphere, great family. It’s worth trying to rassle over parking to find this hidden gem.
