Being from Louisiana I was told that I had to check out the Cajun Bowl. The jambalaya choices are different and far from traditional jambalaya like chicken and sausage. I ordered the crawfish etouffee and found it to be pretty good. The gumbo was not up to par. The owner says he is from Lafayette but his jambalaya was red…meaning tomatoes. Nothing wrong with that but that is New Orleans creole style. My experience is that typically SW Louisiana cajun style is brown as they don’t use tomatoes in their cooking. The tables are a mishmash and too close together. So I am sad to find this restaurant disappointing. I may come back to try a poboy…
July 2017A Cajun Bowl, NE 3rd Ave, Cape Coral, Fl., Here is my 2 cents on the food and chatter.I must first say, in all parts of the world, each local area can have very different style for the same dish.So for me this was a different style of the same food. The food. They have hands down the very BEST sweet tea in SWFL. I get sweet tea at all my outings. If it is house made……Sweet just right no bitterness perfect. The cup of red beans and rice. $5 a large cup. ( good portion good price) it is not like a Jamaican red bean and rice. It had chunks of meat and was just different though good.Shrimp Etouffee, ( pronounce A-2-fave) I will acknowledge this is the 2nd place that has the hottest spiciest food in the area. It had potatoe salad. It reminded me of the german tater salad my Mom made. I hated it. It was too sour with vinegar. But that’s me.They claim this is the best etouffee in SWFL. I found it was ok. Very spicy. But since I have etouffee only twice before I am not sure. The price is $13 or so. The portion was very generous. Good for seconds later on.Be warn what is Cajun mild is Florida Hot !!!!!The eatery is small (4 tables) but does a lot of take out. It has a large following It has been here for 2-3 years so they are doing something right.Pass by not real good gumbo. Cajun Bowl…. I have seen the ads for a few months. It is only 2 miles away or so.I had high expectations. I love gumbo I make a GREAT GUMBO. I have had outstanding gumbo in Oakland,Ca eatery, and friends grandma recipes. . BUTThe good first.. Beautiful decor, wonderful folks and a surprising tasty potato salad. The gumbo….. Wow it was very watery , no roux, not thick bad texture. The taste was overwhelm with too much smokiness . Plenty of sausage though that was good., the rice should have been served on the side or in a cradle. It had a good heat .. It sneaked up on you… Over all thumbs down.Red beans and rice….NOPE… no flavor just beans mixed with rice. Better taste out of a box.I hate writing negative reviews but I am for the flavor of the food. Also 10 bucks for a gumbo and canned tea seems a bit pricey. I was hoping for house sweet tea. I was hoping for better.
