I’m only in Gainesville about once per year, and I have to soak up all my old flavors in a short time. About 3 years or so ago, Reggae Shack became a new must go-to. Went straight to Satchel’s upon arrival in town, but it was like the 1 day of the week they weren’t open. I’d heard some rumblings about a new Jamaican Jerk kitchen in town, and we went straight there. I’ve been there at least 3 times in as many years (when I visit my mom in FL). It has been consistently delivering awesome food and service quality. The jerk spices have some heat, some might say too much, I on the other hand am glad that they have Scotch Bonnet hot sauces on the table to really kick it up! The Jerk plates are served with the meat of choice(Chicken, Pork, Lamb), rice & peas(beans), plantains, and cooked cabbage. Never in my life would I think I’d recommend cabbage, but it is really very good! So, I love this place, it has become one of my go-to places upon visiting Gainesville, even though it was not even here when I lived here. Not out of nostalgia, just great food!-about to go steal my mom’s leftovers while she’s sleeping… Don’t tell.
The Jam!. This place is the real deal. Great food, good atmosphere! Sometimes the service can be a bit slow, but that’s not a huge problem for me, that’s just Gainesville in general. Personally, the oxtail, curried palm hearts, brown stew whole fish, and the jerk chicken are my favorite dishes. Yes, that’s a bit of a list, but it’s difficult to choose since everything there is fantastic!
Shocked to see bad reviews. My husband and I eat at Reggae Shack regularly- at least once every other month for five years now. We bring guests from out of town here all the time. It is one of our very short list of go-to restaurants in Gainesville. The kitchen can be a little uneven but I think that’s reality. I can honestly say that we have never had a bad meal or poor service. I usually order either the escoveich fish or the callaloo and crab but I think I’ve tried all the traditional dishes on the menu, and my husband always orders the jerked chicken (dark meat on the bone!). The food is always delicious. The only thing I don’t like is the noise level- loud music + usually busy + tile floors= LOUD. The food more than makes up for it.
The 2 Musketeers write: OXT…. The 2 Musketeers write:OXTAILS OR CHICKEN????A colorful but not elegant dining area is immediately seen when you enter the restaurant. You get a full view of the kitchen while you wait (a little too long) to be seated. While the entrance has an open door, tables in the second room have an plenty if air conditioning—particularly in the back near the bathrooms! Unfortunately a filled restaurant is a very noisy one. Service is slow and infrequent but the food is plentiful and very good. The Caribbean Chicken was slightly sweet. The oxtails, their signature dish, were delicious in a savory sauce. Side dishes included a rice and peas combo and fabulous sauted cabbage. Food was piled high on the plate and garnished with a couple slices of fried plantains. Though we didn’t try them, there are several tofu and other dishes that are vegetarian. Our rating: 7/8 for food; 0/2 for service and ambiance. Score 70%.
Veg heaven. We stopped by on the way through and we couldn’t be happier to find a vegetarian/vegan place like this. My husband got the vegan steak and I got the jerk tofu sandwich. both amazing.
The jerk chicken was awesome. The portions were huge. I highly recommend this place.
Favorite meal I have ever had while on vacation. From Boston, to Chicago, to LA, to Paris, to Las Vegas, to New York, to Toronto, nothing compares. You will surely not be disappointed!
