Love In Action. I just stopped by this afternoon, couldn’t resist the name Utopia Soul Food Cafe. The place was empty but it was mid-afternoon, and the two women working were very friendly and nice. I had the chicken and rice special with sides of field peas, and okra with tomatoes. Wow! What an incredible find!! I love good food, and I have extensive experience in the restaurant business from humble to high end, so I can say with well-earned authority that this is truly some of the finest, freshest food out there.I honestly thought it would be steam table fare, but after a short while waiting I realized it was being made fresh from scratch, and it was so worth the wait. The flavors of the chicken and rice were perfectly balanced, rice perfectly cooked. It had the simple elegant delicacy that is a hallmark of the best European or Japanese cuisine. The FRESH okra with tomatoes was also perfect. My first impression was that it needed a touch of salt, but the balance of flavors was so perfect I ate it as is. And the field beans were also amazing, perfectly seasoned, delicate and very tasty. Served with the meal was a pancake of crispy, flat-top-griddled hominy cornbread that was naturally sweet and delicious, reminding me of the hand-made hominy corn tacos in Baja California, Mexico,I am in awe of the beautiful simplicity of the food here, and I plan on making the Utopia Soul Food Cafe a regular stop when I’m in downtown Fort Myers. Y’know, you just can’t go wrong when the #1 ingredient in food is Love. Love this place and they will love you back!!!
Keep on going. They wish they had soul. Skip over this place on your way to visit a real soul food restaurant – the Farmer’s Market. Bad food, bad service. They were also out of a lot of menu items. What we were able to get was UNDERCOOKED CHICKEN WINGS and greasy mac & cheese (thanks for adding cheap cheese that turned into a pool of oil under the pasta). For a tiny restaurant with 6 tables, service was BAD. The server couldn’t get the order right twice during the same visit! She refilled ice tea in the Pepsi glass and forgot to bring side dishes. Keep on driving down MLK and avoid this place, because risking life and limb aren’t worth a poor excuse for soul food.
April 2018Utopia Soul Cafe, Dr. MLK,Jr, Blvd. Ft. Myers, Fl. Here is my 2 cents on the food and chatter.Chatter… It has been 5 years since I have been here. They have been open closed then open again. They are now open… It has changed. From being a full restaurant to a hole in the wall for working class folks.BUT the food is still good and for me economical. I got fish and fries with a soda, 5 bucks Taste good and cheap…You can get burger for the same price. They serve breakfast all day… :-).Staff is wonderfull.A couple of tips…Parking lot in rear, parking on street iffy. There is a hair salon next door called Utopia Salon.Soul Food. This is a nice place for soul food. I had the blacken fish with potatoes salad and greens. The salad was a weeee bit watery but very full of flavor. Greens were well prepared including smoked ham hocks.( I found a bit of bone 🙂 ) Fish good spicy enough. People and service were outstanding. As i was leaving a party of 12 were being seated. So a popular place for sure. I was there at 1115 am so I anticipate a busy lunch hour rush. Give it a try.
